Hungary have appointed the 44-year-old Péter Bozsik as their new coach with Lajos Détári as his assistant.
Fine reputation
The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed the appointment after a board meeting, although contracts have not yet been finalised. Bozsik is following in the footsteps of his father, the 1950s Hungary great József Bozsik who coached the national team in 1974, but has earned a fine coaching reputation in his own right. First employed by Vasas SC, his greatest achievement saw him guide Zalaegerszegi TE to their first league title in 2001/02. He has since worked as the club's sporting director.
Tremendous career
The 42-year-old Détári is regarded as Hungary’s finest player of the 1980s, having enjoyed a tremendous career for club and country. He began with Budapest Honvéd FC before representing Olympiacos CFP, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bologna FC, Ancona Calcio and Padova Calcio. Between 1984 and 1994 he was capped 61 times, scoring 13 goals.
Matthäus departure
Hungary have been without a coach since Lothar Matthäus ended a two-year reign when he left for Brazilian club CA Paranaense in January. Bozsik will lead Hungary in their UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying campaign, in which they have been drawn in Group C. Their programme begins against Norway at home on 2 September. However, before then they have lined up a number of friendlies, most notably in England on 30 May.
