Slovakia coach Dušan Galis has stepped down following his side's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group D defeat by Germany.
Mutual consent
Slovakia went into Wednesday's match buoyed by a 5-1 win in Wales on Saturday and hopeful of repeating their 2-0 victory from their previous meeting with Germany a year ago. However, Galis's team suffered a 4-1 loss in Bratislava, prompting today's announcement by the Slovak Football Association that Galis has left his post by mutual consent. FA president František Laurinec said: "It is neither a resignation nor a sacking, but a joint agreement."
Player support
Galis had been under pressure to resign following a 3-0 home reverse against the Czech Republic in September, before Saturday's victory over Wales appeared to earn him some respite with the players even issuing a public show of support. The 56-year-old led ŠK Slovan Bratislava to three league titles in the mid-1990s.
