Rangers results
McLeish stepped down as Rangers boss last year after a disappointing run of results, although his five-year stint in charge had been largely successful. A formidable defender in his playing career with Aberdeen FC, where he developed under Sir Alex Ferguson, McLeish's first task is to sustain Scotland's bright form in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying. They lead Group B and are next in action on 24 March against Georgia.
World Cup
Scottish Football Association chief executive David Taylor said: "We have moved quickly to fill the vacancy caused by the unexpected departure of Walter Smith earlier this month. I am sure all of Scotland will get behind Alex in support of the national side as we try to build on the improved performances of recent times." McLeish's three-year contract will also give him the chance to lead Scotland in qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. As a player, he appeared at three finals and won 77 caps overall. He had begun in management with Premier League clubs Motherwell FC and Hibernian FC.
