Outsiders fancy their chances

Greece coach Otto Rehhagel said his players must peak if they are to cause an upset against Portugal.

No mistakes
The Greeks take on hosts Portugal at the Estádio do Dragão with few predicting an upset in favour of Rehhagel's men. Speaking at the pre-game press conference, the coach said: "Outsiders always have a chance in football. As long as we minimise our mistakes and play with passion, we'll have a chance to win this match."

Dabizas out
However, those hopes have been dented by the loss of key centre-back Nikolaos Dabizas, who picked up a hip injury on Wednesday and was ruled out on the eve of the game. "Apart from Dabizas, we are ready and prepared for the match," Rehhagel said.

Defensive changes
The coach will likely turn to Traianos Dellas and Mihalis Kapsis in the centre against the Portuguese, although if he plays five at the back then Ioannis Goumas could add extra weight to the rearguard. Giourkas Seitaridis is set for the right-back slot with Stylianos Venetidis or Panagiotis Fyssas on the left.

Home advantage
Focusing on the defence, Rehhagel urged his men to avoid lapses such as that which cost them victory in their last meeting with the Portuguese in November. Vassilios Lakis had put them on course for a notable friendly win only for Portugal to level in the second half. The coach warned that the hosts would be an even tougher proposition this time around. "They're playing at home and they have great players who want to win the championship," he said.

'Nothing to lose'
Rehhagel believed his side would be able to play without fear, although he admitted: "It's only natural they are stressed but they are also very excited. It's the Portuguese who will have the pressure, all we have to do is prove why we are here. Greece have nothing to lose."

Valuable experience
Looking at the wider Group A picture, the 63-year-old Rehhagel added: "Compared to Portuguese, Spanish and Russian football, we have to be realists. These countries have an impressive track record. Above all, we will gain valuable experience for future tournaments."

Lone striker
The Greeks, who have never won a match at a major finals, have been boosted by the return to full training this week of leading forward Themistoklis Nikolaidis, along with Dellas and Lakis. Rehhagel has shown a preference for the Club Atlético de Madrid player in the lone striker position and he will be given until as late as possible to make the starting lineup.

Striking options
Even if Nikolaidis does not make it, Rehhagel could still play with just one up front and use Zisis Vryzas in that role. If, as many expect, Greece play with two forwards then Vryzas will likely partner Angelos Charisteas.
