Borimirov invokes spirit of '94

Veteran Daniel Borimirov hopes a "relaxed" Bulgaria squad can benefit from their underdog status.

Bulgaria's most experienced player, Daniel Borimirov, believes his team can draw on the spirit of 1994 to help them at UEFA EURO 2004™. Ten years ago, Bulgaria, who had never previously even won a FIFA World Cup match, reached the semi-finals in the United States with Borimirov playing a key role in their success.

One game at a time
"In terms of attitude there is no difference between 1994 and 2004, the mood is the same," he said. "There's no pressure and we're relaxed which is to our advantage. We're not looking beyond the group stage; we will play one game at a time. At the moment we are only thinking about the Sweden game. They are a very flexible side and play good free-flowing football."

Opposition weakness
Borimirov believes Sweden's back line may be their weakness, though. "Perhaps their defence isn't that good," he said. "We have some quick and skilful strikers who may cause them a lot of problems. If we stick together on the field, we have a chance."

Free from injury
Bulgaria coach Plamen Markov has no injury worries going into the game in Lisbon on Monday. Velizar Dimitrov, Daniel Borimirov and goalkeeper Zdravko Zdravkov, who have all been suffering muscle strains, have recovered and now all 23 players are taking part in full training.
