The Chelsea FC winger did not travel to Portugal with the rest of the Danish squad this week, having received special permission to stay with his mother, who had been seriously ill. Denmark coach Morten Olsen was in daily contact with Grønkjær and confirmed the news this morning.
Condolences sent
Olsen said: "The sympathy of the entire squad is with Grønkjær at the moment. I hope he and his family will have the time to grieve in private. If there is any more news, I will inform you but at the moment I am not going to comment any further." Denmark play their opening Group C match against the Italians in Guimarães at 18.00CET on Monday.
