More than capable
Helguson will be an able deputy for Gudmundsson when the teams meet in Tórshavn on 20 August, after a successful pre-season with his English club Watford FC. The 25-year-old, who has 23 caps, has not seen qualifying action since the 3-0 home victory against Lithuania last October, when he scored the first goal in Reykjavik.
Leg broken
Stabæk IF forward Gudmundsson, who has played a major role in keeping Icelandic hopes of reaching the finals in Portugal alive, broke his leg in training last month. In June, he scored a last-minute winner in the 2-1 home success against the Faroes and then featured in the 3-0 victory in Lithuania.
Two out, two in
Two other changes to the squad are the inclusion of Veigar Pall Gunnarsson and Olafur Örn Bjarnason. They will replace Gudni Bergsson and Gylfi Einarsson. With three games to play, Iceland are second in Group 5, just two points behind leaders Germany and one ahead of third-placed Scotland.
