McClaren answers England call

Steve McClaren will replace Brian Kidd in Sven-Göran Eriksson's England coaching team at UEFA EURO 2004™.

Temporary arrangement
Ex-Blackburn Rovers FC manager Kidd replaced McClaren in the England set-up in January 2003 after the latter opted to concentrate on his role at Middlesbrough. However, with Kidd not fit to return in time for next month's tournament in Portugal, McClaren is to fill in temporarily.

Reason for decision
Kidd told the Football Association's website: "Physically I don't believe I could fully contribute to the level of coaching that will be required at the [UEFA] European Championship. Therefore I have spoken to Sven several times and have decided it is in the interests of everyone involved with England team that I do not travel to Portugal."

'Very sorry'
Eriksson said: "I am very sorry that Brian will not be part of the coaching team this summer, but I fully respect his decision and his professionalism. It is very good for England that we can bring in someone of Steve's calibre at this late stage. I know Steve very well and respect his abilities as a top-class coach, and am looking forward to working with him again."

'Tremendous honour'
McClaren added: "It is a tremendous honour to be involved with the national team, and I have always enjoyed my relationship with Sven and the rest of the coaches and players."

Opening match
England face Iceland on 1 June and Japan four days later in their final warm-up friendlies in Manchester, before beginning their EURO 2004™ campaign in Lisbon against holders France on 13 June.
