Gudni Bergsson has returned to the Iceland squad for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying game against Scotland.
Back in the saddle
The 37-year-old Bolton Wanderers FC central defender will be hoping to add to his tally of 77 international appearances when Iceland travel to Glasgow to take on Berti Vogts' Scotland at Hampden Park on 29 March. Bergsson has not been in coach Atli Edvaldsson's plans until now, having captained the national team for 30 games in an international career stretching from 1984 to 1997.
Hreidarsson injured
Hermann Hreidarsson was ruled out of the game with a knee injury. The Ipswich Town FC defender suffered a deep cut on the joint during his side's English first division match against Stoke City FC on Saturday. The 28-year-old attempted to continue, but was unable to stand. The only player to make the squad who plays club football in his homeland is goalkeeper and former captain Birkir Kristinsson, who plays for ÍBV Vestmannæyjar.
Qualification prospects
With both Iceland and Scotland having played two qualifying games each, Iceland have earned three points while Scotland have four. Iceland lost their last Group 5 game 2-0 at home against the Scots.
