Leeds duo earn England recall

Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer of Leeds United AFC are in the England squad to play Portugal.

Jonathan Woodgate and Lee Bowyer are among five Leeds United AFC players named in Sven-Göran Eriksson's England squad for the friendly against Portugal on Saturday.

Back in the squad
It is the first call-up for the pair since their involvement in a high-profile court case on assault charges of which both were cleared, and they are joined in the 20-man squad by club colleagues Paul Robinson, Danny Mills and Alan Smith. It is Under-21 goalkeeper Robinson's first senior call-up and follows his displacement of Nigel Martyn from the Leeds team.

Veterans miss out
The three veteran players in England's FIFA World Cup squad, goalkeeper David Seaman, defender Martin Keown and striker Teddy Sheringham, are not included while young striker Darius Vassell has also missed out.

Preparing for EURO 2004™
Saturday's friendly at Villa Park offers coach Eriksson his only opportunity to experiment ahead of England's opening EURO 2004™ qualifier away to Slovakia on 12 October.
