New faces
Into the group come the uncapped Boavista FC midfield player Jorge Silva and FC Porto defender Paulo Ferreira. There are also places for the Newcastle United FC playmaker Hugo Viana and Fulham FC forward Luis Boa Morte, and a recall for SL Benfica's Simão Sabrosa who missed the finals through injury.
Pinto counted out
The notable absentees are Jorge Costa and Paulo Sousa, both of whom retired from international football after the World Cup, as well as João Pinto, suspended for punching the referee in the defeat by South Korea.
