Spain 3-1 Germany
Raúl González became Spain's record goalscorer as he scored twice in his country’s 3-1 friendly international win against 2002 FIFA World Cup finalists Germany in Mallorca.
Record breaker
The double strike meant that the Real Madrid CF striker has now scored 31 times for Spain, surpassing the record of 29 goals he previously held jointly with his Madrid team-mate Fernando Hierro.
Composed finish
Raúl broke the deadlock a minute past the half-hour mark, controlling a high pass into the Germany penalty area from Valencia CF midfield player Rubén Baraja before shooting across goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and into the net. However, Spain's lead lasted only eight minutes, as Christian Wörns' powerful header from a corner created confusion in the Spain defence and Fredi Bobic forced the ball in from close range.
Decisive late goals
The second half was a tight affair, but Jens Jeremies almost put the away side in front with 20 minutes remaining with a spectacular effort, as his shot from inside his own half caught Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas by surprise but rebounded back off the crossbar. The same player went close again for Germany two minutes later, but Spain were awarded a penalty 13 minutes from time and Raúl made no mistake from the spot. Guti rounded off the win eight minutes from the final whistle, taking a pass from Vicente into his stride before prodding the ball past Kahn.
Maximum points
The win leaves Spain in good heart ahead of their UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying game against second-placed Ukraine on 29 March - they are currently top of Group 6 with six points from two games. Meanwhile, Germany, top of Group 5 and also with maximum points from their two games, are at home to Lithuania the same night.
