Holtz calls time on Luxembourg

Midfield player Luc Holtz has announced his retirement from international football.

Luxembourg midfield player Luc Holtz has announced his retirement from international football.

‘Simple reason’
The 33-year-old claimed his best days were behind him and wants to give youth a chance. “The reason is very simple,” he said. “It's time for me to make room for younger players as coach Allan Simonsen wants a competitive side in a few years time, when I will no longer be willing to play at international level.”

Luxembourg debut
Holtz made his Luxembourg debut in a 1-1 draw with Portugal in 1991 and went on to represent his country a further 54 times, scoring his only goal against Malta in 1995.

Player-coach
A former FC Avenir Beggen and Etzella Ettelbrück stalwart, Holtz is now free to concentrate on his role as player-coach of Ettelbrück. Luxembourg were demolished 7-0 by Romania in UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying last week.
