Article body
Scotland's Dominic Matteo has announced his retirement from international football because of a persistent knee injury.
Squad withdrawal
The Leeds United AFC captain was named in Berti Vogts' squad for the 12 February friendly match with the Republic Of Ireland, but called the Scottish Football Association (SFA) today to withdraw from that game and to inform them of his wish to be omitted from future pools.
Persistent injury
The 28-year-old won the last of his six caps in March 2002 in Vogts' debut match in charge of Scotland - a 5-0 defeat against France in Paris. A knee operation carried out in October has been successful, but the stress of international matches and club commitments has convinced the Dumfries-born defender to call a halt to his Scotland career. He will continue to play for Leeds.
Considered decision
He said: "This was not an easy decision, or one I took lightly - but I don't want to mess anybody about. I can't guarantee my fitness and have to be fair to Berti Vogts and the other players. I have consulted several specialists who all tell me I have to reduce the number of games I play each year, otherwise I might not be playing in two or three years' time. I wish Berti Vogts and the other players all the best for the remainder of the campaign."
Vogts understanding
Vogts accepted the player's reasons for quitting and said: "Dominic was very open with me about the problems he faces. It is very disappointing that he has come to this decision, as I know he was very keen to play for Scotland and he could have played a key role in my team. I hope that he is able to get the best specialist treatment for his injury."
English upbringing
Former Liverpool FC player Matteo was originally destined for an international career with England. The defender was included in England squads by former coach Glenn Hoddle, but never won a cap and was therefore still eligible to play for the country of his birth despite spending most of his life on Merseyside. He won the first of his Scottish caps against Australia three years ago, but never managed a consistent run in the international team.
