Permanent role for Icelandic duo

Two victories
The Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) agreed two-year contracts with both men after they stepped in on a temporary basis after the departure of Atli Edvaldsson. The pair were only supposed to be in charge for two matches, but following the 2-1 home win against the Faroe Islands and the outstanding 3-0 victory in Lithuania, the KSÍ were certain they had the right men for the job.

"We have been looking around for coaches but saw how they had a good relationship with the team and results were promising so the board asked me to discuss a possible contract," said KSÍ president Eggert Magnusson. Iceland are now in second place in qualifying Group 5, with nine points. They are two points behind leaders Germany, but have one more than Scotland with all three nations having played five matches.

Excited by challenge
Iceland's remaining fixtures see them travel to the Faroe Islands on 20 August before home and away matches against Germany on 6 September and 11 October respectively. "We are very positive about this challenge and eager to get started," Sigurvinsson said. His partner Olafsson was previously in charge of the national team for 14 games between 1995 and 97.
