The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) announced details of the game today after a proposed friendly against Croatia fell through. "We chose Lithuania because of their good recent performances and because their playing style is similar to that of Denmark and Norway - our opponents in the [UEFA] European Championship qualifiers," FRF official Cristian Bivolaru said.
'Friendly offer'
F.Y.R. Macedonia had hoped to play Romania on the same day. A Macedonian Football Union spokesman said: "We received a fax with the offer of a friendly but two days later they [the FRF] informed us they had already arranged a friendly against Lithuania."
Destination Lithuania
The match will take place either in the capital Vilnius or in Kaunas. Romania are in third place in UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying Group 2 behind Norway and Denmark, the latter having won 5-2 in Bucharest in March. Lithuania are second behind Germany in Group 5.
