Iceland win moves goalposts for Hallgrímsson

I can't really describe this experience – doing something like this with your best friends is fantastic. That's the feeling of all the lads in the group. We're a tight-knit group and what we've done is fantastic. Having 10,000 people here from Iceland is unbelievable. It's like having your family at the game. I know probably 50% of the crowd – or at least recognise them!

Mixed feelings in my head right now – still getting over it. Of course, just full of joy and happiness and – yeah – the biggest moment in Icelandic football history, so naturally I'm really proud and happy. [England are] the dream team for me, it's the team I rooted for when I was young, watching the European Championship and the World Cup, so it will be fantastic to meet them.

We were lucky on occasions but we showed a fantastic mentality throughout the game. There were a lot of tired legs at the end – as you know we have played the same players for all of our games. We are very proud of our squad and our players and we have to give them a lot of credit for this game. We won in the end but it was a roller coaster.

How big a deal is this for Iceland? I would guess we will have to change our national holiday. It is normally 17 June but I think we will change it now. That's how much it means to us. Icelanders know everything about English football – we are English football crazy – we don't need to amalyse them much.

I don't think it's a personal failure. It's an experience for me and the team. The second half was the first time we saw [us perform at our best] at this tournament. The pressing was more exact, the movement was there.

It's a disappointing day, but the worst day of my career ... You don't wish for such days, but they happen. What's important is to bounce back. We must not forget that we managed to qualify on merit for the first time ever. The positives are forgotten all too quickly amid all the focus on negatives.

We haven't lived up to our expectations, for whatever reason. We will be analysing that in the next few months. But the disappointment is really huge.

Now we are just all disappointed that we didn't manage to go through, especially today. We had enough chances to get through to the round of 16. Sadly we didn't manage to do that and, of course, I'm very sorry I didn't score that chance.
