Former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen has been named in Iceland's UEFA EURO 2016 squad at the age of 37.
Gudjohnsen, who has won 84 caps for Iceland, looked set to miss out after a short spell with Chinese club Shijiazhuang came to a premature end in November, but he linked up with Norwegian club Molde in February. "If he hadn't found a club, he would not have been picked," said Lars Lagerbäck.
Gudjohnsen retired from international football in November 2013 but was recalled in March 2015 and played three qualifiers en route to France, scoring once as Iceland booked a major final tournament debut. "He has taken a step up at Molde," said Heimir Hallgrímsson, who shares coaching duties with Lagerbäck. "He looks fitter and has shown the necessary desire."
Three of the squad are carrying injuries: Gylfi Sigurdsson (shoulder), Aron Gunnarsson (ankle) and Kolbeinn Sigthórsson (knee). They are expected to recover before the first game, but there are six players on standby if they fail to make it or if other problems develop.
Lagerbäck to leave
Lagerbäck had a big announcement of his own before Iceland's 23-man squad was announced, revealing his decision to step down after the finals. "It was a very hard decision, I have to admit I haven't gotten any younger," said the 67-year-old Swede. "But the main reason is that maybe I should do something else with friends and family."
