- The only fixtures played between the nations came in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008 and produced two unlikely scorelines.
- Gareth Bale scored his first goal for Wales in the first meeting, in Cardiff, but Slovakia managed five, Dušan Švento getting the first and Róbert Vittek the fifth. The return fixture brought revenge for John Toshack's Wales as they claimed a 5-2 win in Trnava, Craig Bellamy scoring twice.

- The nations met in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying, each losing 1-0 at home. Miroslav Stoch was on target for Slovakia in Moscow; Alan Dzagoev scored Russia's winner in Zilina.
- There had been nothing to choose between the teams either in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, a 1-1 draw in Moscow followed by a goalless stalemate in Bratislava.
- Aleksandr Kerzhakov scored the only goal, his 25th for Russia, in the most recent encounter – a St Petersburg friendly in May 2014.

- England overcame Slovakia 2-1 in Bratislava and Middlesbrough en route to qualifying for the UEFA EURO 2004 finals. Those were the first matches between the nations.
