  • Germany maintained their record of never having failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup when they overcame Ukraine 5-2 on aggregate in a play-off for the 2002 tournament. The second leg in Dortmund, a 4-1 home win, was Ukraine's last match under Valeriy Lobanovskiy.
  • The teams first met in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup. Oliver Bierhoff and Mario Basler scored Germany's goals in a 2-0 home win before a 0-0 draw in Kyiv.
  • The first friendly between the countries took place on 11 November 2011 and produced a 3-3 thriller in the inaugural international staged at the refurbished UEFA EURO 2012 final venue in Kyiv. Germany came from 3-1 down to level with a 77th-minute strike from Thomas Müller; first-half goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Yevhen Konoplyanka had put the hosts 2-0 up.

  • Poland finally ended their 18-match winless run against Germany when they defeated the world champions 2-0 in Warsaw during the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying campaign, Arkadiusz Milik and Sebastian Mila getting the goals. The return match in Frankfurt ended 3-1 to Joachim Löw's side, who went on to top the group.
  • Two Lukas Podolski goals earned Germany a 2-0 victory against the country of his birth at UEFA EURO 2008. Two years earlier, Oliver Neuville's last-minute winner knocked Poland out of the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
  • The teams also met at the first World Cup staged on German soil, in 1974. Again the hosts won 1-0, in a decisive second phase game in Frankfurt, thanks to a late winner from Gerd Müller.
  • Poland striker Robert Lewandowski, the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying competition's leading scorer with a record 13 goals, plays alongside several current and former German internationals at Bayern München. Compatriots Łukasz Piszczek (Borussia Dortmund) and Paweł Olkowski (Köln) are also Bundesliga-based.

  • Northern Ireland famously did the double over West Germany in the qualifying competition for EURO '84, Ian Stewart scoring the only goal in Belfast and Norman Whiteside doing likewise in Hamburg. Those remain their only victories in 14 meetings.
  • The only time the countries have come face to face at a major tournament was at the 1958 FIFA World Cup, a 2-2 group draw in Malmo. Both teams progressed to the quarter-finals.
  • Just one match has been played between the sides this century – a June 2005 friendly in Belfast which Germany won 4-1 – but there will be two more in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
