Bright sunshine helped bring fans out on to the streets as Saint-Denis officially started its countdown to UEFA EURO 2016 with 363 days to go until the opening game at Stade de France.
The city's ambassadors, former French international Steve Marlet and slam poet Grand Corps Malade, joined Mayor Didier Paillard at the 'One Year To Go' event, autographing a sculpture, decorated by artist Marko93, which stands at the Place de l'Esplanade. "It's a piece blending handwirting from all over the world and small stained glass balloons," the graffiti artist said.
Guests and onlookers then followed the Pikolos band to the bridge that leads to the Stade de France, where the countdown officially began, Charaf – a 15-year-old freestyler – providing some entertainment. Seven games – including the opener, involving France – will take place at this venue, which was opened to host games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
"In a year France will launch the big event that UEFA EURO 2016 is," said Mayor Pailard. "For our city, welcoming such an event is an opportunity, a source of pride and a great responsibility." UEFA EURO 2016 mascot Super Victor turned up to help crown the occasion, having been involved in two treasure hunt events in the city earlier in the day.
