Gerrard's proud place among England centurions

Steven Gerrard's retirement from international football means that he withdraws from the England scene having made 114 appearances, leaving him third on the list of his country's most-capped players.

The Liverpool FC midfielder is one of just eight Englishmen to have contested a century of games for the Three Lions. That elite group is headed by Peter Shilton, whose international career spanned 20 years, with the goalkeeper making the last of his 125 outings at the age of 40 in 1990. The list also features two members of England's 1966 FIFA World Cup-winning side in skipper Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.

Former Wolverhampton Wanderers FC stalwart Billy Wright was the first footballer in history to make 100 international appearances, playing his last game for his country in 1959, while Frank Lampard was the most recent to reach the landmark, running out for the 100th time against Ukraine in Kyiv in September 2013. Wayne Rooney is the man most likely to reach the total next, the Manchester United FC forward bearing down on three figures with 95 caps to his name.
