Hosts Portugal had opened their campaign with defeat by Greece but headed into their last-four meeting with the Dutch on the crest of a wave after beating Spain and then overcoming England on penalties. Though a teenage Cristiano Ronaldo gave them a 26th-minute lead against Dick Advocaat's side, it was not until Maniche's magical strike from the left apex of the penalty area – just before the hour – that Portugal believed a home final was within reach.
"I was thinking about doing what I did, which was shooting at goal," said Maniche, 36. "I never imagined that it would be a great goal, but when you shoot at goal, or when you take a shot, the objective is to try and score. Fortunately I had luck, which also helps a bit in those circumstances, but [I was thinking about] shooting with conviction. I think it was a historic moment, not only for me but for the whole team, but obviously especially for me it was a very remarkable moment because I will never forget that goal."
