Germany beaten, France and England held

While the likes of Spain and the Netherlands continued their impressive UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying form on Tuesday evening, a number of those hoping to reach next year's finals continued their preparations with friendly fixtures. UEFA.com rounds up the action, though you can also read individual reports on Poland's 0-0 draw against Greece and Ukraine's 2-0 defeat by Italy.

Germany 1-2 Australia
Germany suffered a first defeat since their 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-final exit, Australia gaining revenge for their 4-0 group stage reverse in South Africa. Mario Gomez struck a 26th-minute opener but the game changed after the interval, David Carney slotting past Tim Wiese to equalise after the hour. Only two minutes later Luke Wilkshire converted from the spot after Harry Kewell had been fouled. "It's a pity, we had things under control in the first half, the young players did well," said Germany coach Joachim Löw.

France 0-0 Croatia
Croatia made amends for their UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group F reverse in Georgia by ending Les Bleus' six-game winning streak. Laurent Blanc changed the France XI after their 2-0 Group D win in Luxembourg but the finishing touch was missing; Karim Benzema and Jérémy Menez missed good chances and Adil Rami hit a post 22 minutes from time before being departing with a shoulder injury. The visitors had much of the play in the first half, but Ivan Perišić was denied by Hugo Lloris in the 38th minute.

England 1-1 Ghana
Asamoah Gyan struck in added time to earn the visitors a share of the spoils at Wembley. England, 2-0 victors against Wales on Saturday, took the lead just before half-time, Andy Carroll rifling in his first international goal after Ashley Young had earlier spurned a glorious chance from barely two metres out. Carroll looked to have won it on only his second senior outing, but Gyan somehow engineered enough space inside a crowded penalty area before finishing past Joe Hart.

Portugal 2-0 Finland
Rúben Micael scored twice on his debut as Portugal, who were held 1-1 by Chile on Saturday evening, defeated Finland in Aveiro. The FC Porto midfielder gave Paulo Bento's side the lead in the tenth minute when he turned in Ricardo Quaresma's cross-shot. His and Portugal's second arrived 19 minutes from time, Micael tapping in Nani's chip across goal.

Republic of Ireland 2-3 Uruguay
FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay were made to work hard in Dublin. Diego Lugano set the tone for an entertaining encounter with a 12th-minute goal which was quickly cancelled out by Shane Long's header. Edinson Cavani continued the prolific form he has shown for SSC Napoli to make it 2-1 midway through the first half, before Abel Hernández increased the lead. After Ireland had halved the deficit through Keith Fahey's penalty three minutes after half-time, Andy Keogh wasted their best chance of earning a late draw.

Slovakia 1-2 Denmark
Brøndby IF midfielder Michael Krohn-Dehli scored with 18 minutes to go in Trnava to secure Denmark's first win of 2011. Kornel Saláta deflected Dennis Rommedahl's cross into his own net after just three minutes, and Nicklas Bendtner came close to increasing the Danes' lead on 22 minutes. However, Filip Hološko had already had one sight of goal before he pounced on a defensive lapse to level just after the half-hour. The Danes took charge after the break, though, and Krohn-Dehli got the winner after the visitors had created a raft of opportunities.

Belarus 0-1 Canada
Belarus were beaten for a second time in four days, with an under-strength side going down to Canada in Antalya, Turkey. Bernd Stange was without six first-team players, and while his side did not wilt, they failed to convert their chances, just as they had in losing 1-0 in Albania on Saturday. Houston Dynamo defender André Hainault headed the only goal from a corner after 57 minutes, with Aleksandr Kulchiy, Aleksandr Bychenok and Sergei Omelyanchuk all passing up chances to equalise.

Cyprus 0-1 Bulgaria
Cyprus thought they had taken a 19th-minute lead when Alexandros Garpozis headed in, but his effort was ruled offside. Tsvetan Genkov headed over at the other end soon afterwards, and Stanislav Manolev scuffed a volley wide before Martin Petrov scored the only goal ten minutes before the break, sprinting through to collect a loose ball before rounding goalkeeper Antonis Giorgallides. Giorgallides kept out another Petrov shot after the break, and Cyprus came close to equalising only for Vladislav Stoyanov to block Nestor Mytidis's close-range effort.

Qatar 1-1 Russia
Russia ended their 386-minute wait for a goal but failed to win for the fourth successive match as they came from behind to draw in Doha. Dick Advocaat's charges fell behind to Mohammed Kasola's effort after four minutes and were lucky not to concede more as the hosts hit the woodwork twice in the next five minutes. Russia then found their feet, Roman Shirokov squandering a clear chance before Andrey Arshavin fed Roman Pavlyuchenko to level in the 34th minute.
