Manchester City 7-0 Schalke: Champions League at a glance

Manchester City are through to the UEFA Champions League last eight after a stunning 7-0 win against Schalke – their biggest ever victory in Europe. Josep Guardiola's side, already 3-2 to the good from the first leg in Gelsenkirchen, had one foot in the quarter-finals when Sergio Agüero converted from the spot on 35 minutes. His second, after Raheem Sterling's back-heel, and Leroy Sané's drilled finish made it job done by half-time.

Sané laid on Sterling, Bernardo Silva – at the end of a devastating passing move from the hosts – and Phil Foden for further goals in the second half, with Gabriel Jesus getting in on the act with a first-time strike late on. Schalke did not know what had hit them.

A third quarter-final in four seasons beckons for City after this excellent performance. After an opening half-hour of stubborn resistance, Schalke simply could not cope with the speed of City's attack during a second period when Guardiola's men got behind the opposition's high back line time and again, their efforts spearheaded by Sané who, against his old club, added three second-half assists to a first-half goal.

Sané was as rampant as City were ruthless in their dispatching of his home-town team. The German international had a hand in four of City's seven goals to back up his brilliant free-kick from the first game. You could say he came back to haunt them, but Schalke will, at the very least, take pride in how far their academy graduate has come.

Dubbed Champions League "teenagers" by their manager on Monday, City continue to mature in this competition and are now in their third quarter-final in four seasons. They are also, quite remarkably, still on for a quadruple; the League Cup is already tied up, with their FA Cup quarter-final at second-tier Swansea taking place on Saturday. They also top the Premier League, one point ahead of Liverpool.

What's next?

City have three fixtures prior to the first leg of their last-eight tie. The English champions go to Swansea in the FA Cup this weekend, before travelling to Fulham and hosting Cardiff in the Premier League.

Struggling domestically, Schalke will want to end their season on a positive note, beginning with the visit of Leipzig on Saturday before a trip to Hannover. Domenico Tedesco's team then welcome Werder Bremen in the German Cup quarter-finals.
