Lyon v Manchester City facts

Manchester City have made a strong recovery from matchday one's unexpected home defeat by Lyon and travel to France for the rematch top of Group F – although Lyon are also well placed to progress to the round of 16.

• Goals from Maxwel Cornet (26) and Nabil Fekir (43) earned Lyon victory at the City of Manchester Stadium despite Bernardo Silva's second-half goal for the home side, a winning start to the French side's bid to reach the round of 16 for the first time since 2011/12.

• City have won all three games since then and sit three points clear of Lyon in the standings, with Hoffenheim on three, one more than Shakhtar Donetsk. City – who have reached the round of 16 for the last five seasons – will be through with a draw and will clinch first place with a win. Lyon will be through with a win and a draw will be enough if Hoffenheim-Shakhtar is also drawn due to their better head-to-head record against the German club.

• After the City win, Lyon recovered from 0-2 down at home to Shakhtar on matchday two to salvage a point. They then drew 3-3 at Hoffenheim before another draw (2-2) at home, the German club scoring an added-time equaliser in both games.

• Those results make it four wins – and only one defeat – in the last eight European matches for Bruno Génésio's side, who have scored two or more goals in each of their last five European fixtures.

• Lyon are in the group stage for the third time in four seasons – their 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns both ended at that hurdle.

• City responded to the Lyon reverse with a 2-1 win at Hoffenheim before Shakhtar were beaten 3-0 away and 6-0 at home – the latter result the Manchester club's biggest win in UEFA club competition.

• Josep Guardiola's side finished 19 points clear in the English Premier League last season, picking up a record 100 points – although there was frustration as their European campaign ended against familiar opponents, domestic rivals Liverpool running out 5-1 aggregate winners in the quarter-final.

• City have won three of their last five European away games, losing the other two.

• The Manchester club picked up six points away from home in last season's group stage, winning at Feyenoord (4-0) and Napoli (4-2) before being beaten at Shakhtar.

• Despite their current run of three successive victories, City have won only four of their last nine European matches, home and away – losing the other five.

• City's best UEFA Champions League performance was reaching the 2015/16 semi-finals; this is their eighth consecutive appearance in the group stage.

• The Citizens have visited France only twice before, drawing 2-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals – Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho getting the goals – and winning through 3-2 on aggregate. Their last visit brought a 3-1 reverse at Monaco in the 2016/17 round of 16, Leroy Sané on target, and an away-goals defeat after a 6-6 aggregate draw.

• Lyon marked Bruno Génésio's 150th game in charge with a 1-0 win against local rivals St-Étienne on Friday, Jason Denayer scoring the only goal – his first since scoring for Celtic in March 2015. Lyon played the last 20 minutes with ten men following Rafael's red card.

• Lyon have lost only one of their last 14 matches in all competitions (W7 D6) – a 5-0 loss at Paris Saint-Germain on 7 October, their heaviest defeat since a 6-1 loss at Nantes on 15 February 2000.
