Hopefuls hampered at home

Manchester United FC were among the UEFA Champions League contenders who dropped points on Sunday.

Group A
Olympiacos CFP managed to lose ground in the Greek title race despite drawing 0-0 with last week's leaders AEK Athens FC. The draw enabled victorious Panathinaikos FC to leapfrog both clubs into top spot.

Group B
Goals from Luís Figo and Michael Owen saw Real Madrid CF defeat Malaga CF and move into second in Spain, seven points behind leaders FC Barcelona. Club medical staff are confident that David Beckham and Walter Samuel will return for next weekend's league game against Albacete Balompié. AS Roma, fielding a young side with Antonio Cassano and Christian Panucci both left out through ill discipline, recovered from going a goal down to draw at AC Milan. Vincenzo Montella's ninth goal of the season proved enough to secure a share of the spoils. A late goal from Belarussian Valentin Belkevich rescued a 1-1 draw for Ukrainian title hopefuls FC Dynamo Kyiv against mid-table FC Arsenal Kyiv.

Group C
Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC will hope to continue from where they left off against AFC Ajax in midweek when they take on FC Ashdod on Monday night. Following that surprise 2-1 defeat in Tel-Aviv, Ajax coach Ronald Koeman made wholesale changes to his squad for the trip to Willem II. He was rewarded with a 3-1 victory, Mauro Rosales scoring twice, and was able to give the fit-again Tomáš Galásek a run-out as a substitute.

Group D
Manchester United FC were held to a goalless draw by Manchester City FC at Old Trafford and had Alan Smith sent off for two bookable offences. Wayne Rooney started on the substitutes' bench but came on for the last 15 minutes. The side United defeated in midweek, AC Sparta Praha, take on FK Mladá Boleslav on Monday night.

Group E
Panathinaikos surged to the top of the Hellenic National League with a 4-0 win away against Iraklis FC, Maciej Bykowski scoring twice in the first half-hour to set his side on the way to their fifth domestic victory of the campaign. Rosenborg BK's Norwegian season has come to an end but PSV Eindhoven, their conquerors in midweek, sped to a 3-0 win at FC Den Bosch to stay top in the Netherlands. André Ooijer returned from injury to feature but John de Jong (knee), Kasper Bøgelund (thigh) and Michael Lamey (muscle) are still out.

Group F
Andriy Shevchenko took just six minutes to break the deadlock for Milan at home against Roma but they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw, which left Carlo Ancelotti's side four points behind leaders Juventus FC. Despite Julius Aghahowa's goal, FC Shakhtar Donetsk conceded a last-minute goal to lose 2-1 against FC Tavriya Simferopol and see their lead at the top cut to a single point.

Group G
Valencia CF's Spanish title ambitions were rocked by a 1-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Getafe CF. Vicente Rodríguez is still having treatment on an ankle injury, while Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala have been training apart from the main group but are expected to rejoin their colleagues at some point over the next week. FC Internazionale Milano's Adriano, who is suspended for the Nerazzurri's Matchday 5 encounter away against Werder Bremen, scored an 81st-minute goal to secure a 1-1 draw at ACF Fiorentina in Serie A.

Group H
Paris Saint-Germain FC's Sylvain Armand was sent off 19 minutes into his side's Ligue 1 encounter with Olympique de Marseille but his side nevertheless wrapped up a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Pauleta and Edouard Cissé. There are two Group H sides in action on Monday night - FC Porto play at home against Sporting Clube de Portugal while PFC CSKA Moskva take on city rivals FC Dinamo Moskva in Russia.
