Two former European champions meet in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals as Barcelona take on Inter at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

Barça – in the last four for the first time since 2019 – are bidding to reach the final for the first time since claiming their fifth European Cup in 2015, while Inter – runners-up in 2023 – were European champions for a third time in 2010, beating Barcelona in an epic semi-final.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona were 5-3 aggregate winners against Borussia Dortmund in this season's quarter-finals, when Inter edged out Bayern 4-3, ending the German club's hopes of appearing in the final in their own stadium in Munich.

Home record vs Italian clubs: W20 D9 L3

This is Barcelona’s second game against Italian opponents this season; they drew 2-2 at home to Atalanta on Matchday 8.

Barcelona had previously faced Italian opposition in last season's round of 16, beating Napoli 4-2 on aggregate (1-1 a, 3-1 h). That made their record in two-legged ties against Italian sides W10 L5 with victories in the last three.

The second-leg victory is one of only two in their last eight matches against Serie A sides (D4 L2).

It is also Barça’s sole victory in five home games against Italian visitors (D3 L1); they had won the previous five and nine of the previous ten (D1).

This is Barcelona's 13th Champions League semi-final – level with Bayern and behind only Real Madrid (17) – and 17th in the European Cup overall. Their record is W7 L9.

Barça have lost three of their last four semi-finals, including the most recent, against Liverpool in 2018/19 (3-0 h, 0-4 a).

That second-leg loss was a fourth successive away defeat in semi-finals; Barcelona have managed only two away wins overall at this stage of the competition (D2 L11).

Second behind Liverpool in this season's league phase (W6 D1 L1), Barcelona beat Benfica in the round of 16 (1-0 a, 3-1 h) and Dortmund in the quarter-finals (4-0 h, 1-3 a).

Barcelona have won only 11 of their last 23 home European games, losing six, but have scored 21 goals in their six fixtures this season (W5 D1).

Inter

Record vs Spanish clubs: W16 D14 L24 F58 A70
Away record vs Spanish clubs: W3 D4 L18

Inter’s last game against Spanish opponents ended their interest in the 2023/24 Champions League, a 2-1 second-leg defeat at Atlético de Madrid – in which Federico Dimarco had given them the lead, making it 2-0 on aggregate – preceding a 2-3 defeat on penalties in the round of 16.

The first-leg win against Atlético made it three Inter wins in their last 18 games against Liga clubs (D4 L11), a run that also includes a 3-2 reverse against Sevilla in the 2020 UEFA Europa League final in Cologne.

Inter had lost six successive away games in Spain before their 2022 draw at Barcelona and have been beaten on seven of their last ten visits (D3). The Nerazzurri's last win in the country was a 5-1 success at Valencia in the 2004/05 Champions League group stage.

The Nerazzurri's record against Spanish clubs in two-legged knockout ties is W5 L10, the 2010 elimination of Barcelona their sole victory in the last four.

This is Inter's second Champions League semi-final in three years, and a fourth overall. They are in the last four of the European Cup for a tenth time overall.

The Nerazzurri have won their last two semi-finals, a 3-0 aggregate defeat of neighbours AC Milan in 2022/23 (2-0 a, 1-0 h) making their overall record at this stage W6 L3.

Simone Inzaghi's side were runners-up to Manchester City in the 2023 final, losing 1-0 in Istanbul – Inter's most successful Champions League campaign since lifting the trophy in 2010.

Inter were fourth in this season's league phase (W6 D1 L1) before beating Feyenoord (2-0 a, 2-1 h) and Bayern (2-1 a, 2-2 h) in the knockout stage.

The first-leg victory at Bayern made it 12 wins in Inter's last 28 away Champions League games (D7 L9), and ten in the last 19.
