The UEFA Champions League is once again the stage for a Madrid derby as Real Madrid meet Atlético de Madrid for the sixth time in the last 12 seasons of European competition.
Madrid have triumphed in four of the teams' last five European meetings – edging out Atleti in the Champions League finals of 2014 and 2016 – but lost the last, in the 2018 UEFA Super Cup.
The holders eliminated Manchester City in this season's knockout phase play-offs (3-2 a, 3-1 h) while Atlético qualified direct for this stage after finishing fifth in the league phase.

Héctor Rial and a Ferenc Puskás penalty overturned Chuzo's opener in the first leg, Atlético prevailing in the return thanks to Enrique Collar's effort. That meant a replay six days later in Zaragoza, where Alfredo Di Stéfano's early strike was swiftly cancelled out by Collar. Puskás dealt the decisive blow to take Madrid into a fourth successive final.

In the first European Cup final involving clubs from the same city, Diego Godín's header gave newly crowned Spanish champions Atlético the lead only for Sergio Ramos to level at the last (90+3). Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid ran away with it in extra time courtesy of goals from Gareth Bale (110), Marcelo (118) and a Ronaldo penalty (120).

Ramos' breakthrough in Milan was cancelled out by Atlético substitute Yannick Carrasco 11 minutes from time, Antoine Griezmann having missed a 48th-minute spot kick. The match went to penalties, Juanfran striking the base of the post with Atlético's fourth kick, leaving Ronaldo to take the trophy to Madrid for the 11th time.

Cristiano Ronaldo's first-leg hat-trick put Real Madrid in command of the tie, though Atlético looked to be on course for a famous comeback when Saúl Ñíguez and Antoine Griezmann brought them back within a goal early in the second leg, but an Isco goal three minutes before half-time ended their hopes.

Diego Costa's first-minute strike – the fastest in Super Cup history – gave Simeone's side the advantage at Tallinn's Lilleküla Stadium, but goals from Karim Benzema and Ramos turned the match in Madrid's favour. Costa levelled 11 minutes from time, however, and this time it was Atleti that came out on top in extra time thanks to Saúl Ñíguez and Koke.
The teams have also met in 228 domestic fixtures, most recently a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on 8 February in which Julián Alvarez's first-half strike for the visitors was cancelled out by Kylian Mbappé after the break.
It had also ended 1-1 at the Estadio Metropolitano on 29 September, Éder Militão giving Madrid the lead with Ángel Correa equalising in stoppage time.
Madrid have won 111 and lost 56 of the teams' domestic fixtures, with 61 draws.
The Merengues have won 18 of the sides' 44 Copa del Rey fixtures, losing 12, although Atleti have triumphed in four of the five finals between the clubs – most recently a 2-1 extra-time success at the Bernabéu in 2012/13.
Atleti beat Madrid 2-1 on aggregate in the 2014 Spanish Super Cup final, Madrid prevailing on penalties in the 2020 final and 5-3 after extra time in last season's semi-final.

Seven of Madrid's last nine European games against Spanish sides have involved Aleti – the exceptions Super Cup victories against Sevilla in 2014 (2-0) and 2016 (3-2 aet).
Madrid have lost their last two European fixtures against fellow Liga sides – as many as in their previous 17 matches (W10 D5).
A 0-2 defeat by Barcelona in the 2010/11 Champions League semi-final first leg – a tie Madrid went on to lose 1-3 on aggregate – is the Merengues' only home reverse against Spanish visitors in Europe.

Atleti's last four European matches against Spanish clubs – and seven of the last nine – have involved Real Madrid.
The exception came in the 2015/16 Champions League quarter-finals, when Simeone's side beat Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate (1-2 a, 2-0 h).
Atleti have won five of their nine two-legged European contests against Spanish sides, the 2017 loss to Real Madrid the most recent.
A 1-0 win at Valencia in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg – completing a 5-2 aggregate victory – is Atleti's only away European win against Spanish opposition. They have lost six of the other eight, including the last three.
Atleti finished top of their section in the 2023/24 Champions League and then ousted Inter Milan on penalties in the round of 16 (0-1 a, 2-1 h aet, 3-2 pens) before losing to Borussia Dortmund in the last eight (2-1 h, 2-4 a).
The victory against Inter made Atleti's round of 16 record W7 L3.
A 4-0 loss at Benfica on Matchday 2 this season – equalling Atlético's biggest Champions League defeat – made it one win and seven defeats in ten away games, but they have since won at Paris Saint-Germain (2-1), Sparta Praha (6-0) – matching their biggest Champions League victory – and Salzburg (4-1).

Madrid slipped to third place in La Liga with a 2-1 defeat at Real Betis on Saturday, a game in which Brahim Díaz had given them an early lead.
A 2-0 home victory against Girona on 23 February is Madrid's only Liga victory in five games (D2 L2).
Madrid were 1-0 winners at Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg on 26 February, Endrick scoring the only goal.
Kylian Mbappé has 14 goals in his last 13 games, 17 in La Liga this season and is Madrid's top scorer in all competitions with 28.
Federico Valverde has not played since the second leg against Manchester City.
Dani Ceballos suffered a thigh muscle injury at Real Sociedad and sat out Saturday's loss.

Substitute Julián Alvarez, who got the only goal, is Atleti's top scorer this season with 21 in all competitions. The striker scored 19 in 54 appearances for Manchester City last season.
Atlético have scored 16 Liga goals from substitutes this season, more than any other team in Europe's top five leagues.
A 1-0 loss at Leganés on 18 January – ending a 15-match winning run, a club record – is Atleti's only defeat in 26 games in all competitions (W21 D4).
Atleti's defence is the best in La Liga with 16 goals conceded in 26 matches.
On 25 February, Atleti drew 4-4 against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg in a game they led 2-0 and trailed 2-4. The second leg will be played on 2 April in Madrid.
