Rogers shines as Villa secure top eight

"It was a crazy experience, crazy atmosphere, and a crazy game," said Morgan Rogers after Aston Villa beat Celtic 4-2 to secure a top-eight finish and qualify directly for the round of 16.

The 22-year-old opened the scoring inside three minutes, latching onto Jacob Ramsey's cross and steering a firm side-footed finish into the net. Just two minutes later, he let fly a stunning effort into the top corner, becoming the first player to score twice in the opening five minutes of a Champions League match.

With Villa clinging to a 3-2 lead, Rogers sealed his first senior hat-trick, slotting past two Celtic defenders on the goal line.

"It's probably the highlight of my career so far," said the forward. "Just to be a part of it and contribute the way I did – I'm thoroughly happy. For the team, it's a massive achievement. We should all be proud of ourselves. We have the hunger and the drive, and a manager that pushes us every day. We're going in the right direction; we just have to stay humble, keep our feet on the ground, and keep going."

Second-half surge saves City

Manchester City staged a gripping second-half fightback to overcome Club Brugge 3-1, rescuing their European campaign and wrapping up a place in the knockout phase play-offs.

Only a win would guarantee Pep Guardiola's side's progression, but they faced a Club Brugge team unbeaten in their last four Champions League matches – yet also on the brink of elimination.

City's night took a grim turn moments before half-time when Raphael Onyedika's assured strike put the visitors ahead. "In the second half, we let our souls and hearts free," said Guardiola. Mateo Kovačić sparked the revival, capping a marauding run from deep to fire City level. "We needed a quick goal and that's what happened. It gave us the push to keep going," said the midfielder.

With momentum in their favour, City forced an own goal to take the lead before Savinho rubber-stamped the victory in style – chesting the ball into his stride before rifling home the third. "I know that when we score a goal, with our [fans], we can come back," reflected Guardiola after his charges showed resilience to finish 22nd in the table.

Lille's biggest win seals last-16 place

"It was the perfect evening," said coach Bruno Génésio after Lille stormed to a resounding 6-1 victory over Feyenoord, claiming seventh place in the table and their biggest-ever win in a UEFA competition match.

Osame Sahraoui's impressive finish from a tight angle put Lille in front, but the visitors soon equalised. Undeterred, the hosts pressed forward, forcing an own goal in the 38th minute. Angel Gomes extended the lead after the break, triggering a ruthless four-goal spell in 24 minutes, with Jonathan David and Rémy Cabella adding to another own goal.

"It was hard to imagine us finishing in the top eight. I don't think many would have dreamed we could make it here," Génésio admitted, attributing his team's success to the "spirit within the side".

Before tonight, Lille had never scored more than three goals in a European Cup or Champions League match. Their previous biggest European win was a 5-1 triumph over Slavia Praha in the 2009/10 Europa League.

Benfica march on after Turin triumph

Benfica bounced back from the last-gasp Matchday 7 loss to Barcelona with a crucial 2-0 success at Juventus, earning 16th place and a spot in the knockout phase play-offs.

Set up by Alexander Bah, Vangelis Pavlidis turned in the opener from close range to put Benfica on course for three points in Turin. "We've always tried to play attacking football from the off," said the goalscorer, as Benfica carved out several more chances in a dominant first half.

Juve, spurred on by their home crowd, pushed to get back into the game, forcing Anatoliy Trubin into action but Orkun Kökçü sealed the win, drilling a low shot into the bottom corner ten minutes from time.

"Tonight we needed at least a point, but we managed to take all three," added Pavlidis. "It was a great game; we scored two nice goals and defended well. We're happy that Benfica will have the chance to continue in the knockout phase."
