The inaugural league phase of the UEFA Champions League has come to a conclusion, with the new format throwing up plenty of intriguing twists and turns as 36 teams battled it out.

UEFA.com picks out eight games that particularly grabbed the headlines. Vote for your favourite!

Matchday 1: Bayern München 9-2 GNK Dinamo

Vincent Kompany's managerial debut in the Champions League was one to remember as he led his Bayern side to a resounding victory against GNK Dinamo. Harry Kane struck four as 11 goals were scored in Munich, the joint-second highest total of any game in the competition's history.

The result had Bayern fans dreaming big, with the 2025 Champions League showpiece set to take place at their home ground. "The final in Munich is a dream for the fans, a dream that needs to stay alive," their Belgian coach explained, though the 38-year-old also emphasised that "no trophies are won in September".

Matchday 2: Leipzig 2-3 Juventus

Two star strikers showed off their finishing prowess as Juventus downed Leipzig at the RB Arena. Slovenian ace Benjamin Šeško twice gave the German hosts the advantage – his first goal a sublime finish after controlling Loïs Openda's pinpoint pass – but Serbian forward Dušan Vlahović replied on both occasions, his second coming after the dismissal of Juve goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Despite being a player down, the Turin club conjured a winner in the 82nd minute, Francisco Conceição finding the far corner after dancing past two defenders in the Leipzig box. "It was a really crazy game," concluded Player of the Match Vlahović. "It was difficult against such a well-coached team."

Matchday 3: Real Madrid 5-2 Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund fell victim to the magic of Vinícius Júnior and the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu as Madrid roared back from two goals down. Nuri Sahin's men raced out of the blocks in this rematch of the 2024 final, taking a 2-0 interval lead through Donyell Malen and Jamie Gittens. "We found it comfortable to have and use possession," the Dortmund coach said of the first period.

As for the second, Sahin conceded that "there are few players able to do what Vinícius did to us there." The Brazilian winger prodded home after Antonio Rüdiger had pulled one back, before a pair of slaloming dribbles and sublime finishes capped the win and his hat-trick, with Lucas Vázquez having fired Los Blancos ahead. "It's a dream come true when our fans chant my name," said the three-goal hero.

Matchday 4: Sporting CP 4-1 Manchester City

Ahead of his move to become Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim enjoyed a glorious last dance at the Estádio José Alvalade, propelling unbeaten Sporting CP to second in the standings as they dealt a crushing blow to his new club's city rivals. "It was written that my farewell had to be like this," said the Portuguese coach.

A hat-trick from Viktor Gyökeres, who spent much of his early career in the English second tier, cancelled out Phil Foden's early strike to dispatch the Premier League champions. Moving joint-first in the race for top scorer, the 26-year-old heaped praise upon his departing manager. "He brought me here, believed in me and gave me so many chances to develop, so he deserves all the credit he gets," said the Swedish international.

Matchday 5: PSV 3-2 Shakhtar

Matchday 5 delivered skills, thrills and goals aplenty – the 67 scored a Champions League record – but PSV's comeback win against Shakhtar was the ultimate showstopper. Danylo Sikan slid in to give the visitors an early advantage which Oleksandr Zubkov doubled before half-time, yet their momentum stalled when full-back Pedro Henrique was dismissed midway through the second period.

A flurry of late goals somehow earned PSV victory, Malik Tillman kickstarting the response with a clever free-kick on 87 minutes, squeezing the ball in at the near post from a tight angle, before his stunning second moments later. Ricardo Pepi's finish in the fifth minute of added time then secured all three points at a bouncing PSV Stadion. "When we scored the winner, it was crazy," said defender Ryan Flamingo. "For that to happen in a Champions League match is as good as it gets."

Matchday 6: Dortmund 2-3 Barcelona

Both teams came into this one with four wins from five games and as the two highest scorers in the competition, so it was no surprise to witness a second-half deluge of goals. Raphinha and substitute Ferran Torres both gave the visitors the lead, only for Serhou Guirassy to level each time. Yet Torres had the final say with five minutes left, burying an unerring finish after a cute pass from Lamine Yamal.

"It's not a gimme to pick up three points in this stadium," said 17-year-old Yamal. "We worked very hard for it and were rewarded. Dortmund made it very difficult for us and kept coming back." BVB coach Nuri Sahin did not take too much solace from his team's persistence, however. "It's extremely tough to take," he said. "I don't want to hear that we played well. We have to win these games."

Matchday 7: Benfica 4-5 Barcelona

The Portuguese club appeared on their way to a significant victory when they led 3-1 after half an hour thanks to three Vangelis Pavlidis goals. However, the Greek striker became just the fifth player to score a hat-trick but end on the losing side in the Champions League era after a relentless second half in Lisbon, where Benfica were still 4-2 ahead with 12 minutes remaining.

Robert Lewandowski's second penalty and an Eric García header drew Barça level and set up an end-to-end finish, culminating in Raphinha racing away to fire in a 96th-minute clincher. "Our coach trusts us and we players trust in our work," said the match winner. "That's the most important thing, regardless of the result, because we know we can always turn things around."

Matchday 8: Lille 6-1 Feyenoord

The French team began Matchday 8 in 12th place but this remarkable fifth victory of Lille's campaign catapulted them into seventh. And they did it in style with a four-goal second-half blitz leaving Feyenoord reeling. Osame Sahraoui's early breakthrough at Stade Pierre Mauroy was quickly cancelled out by Santiago Giménez before Gernot Trauner's own goal gave the hosts a 2-1 half-time cushion.

If Angel Gomes' deflected effort made things more comfortable still, a further three goals in seven minutes completed an unexpected cruise. Jonathan David's thumping finish was the pick, with Trauner's second own goal and Rémy Cabella's header sealing a round of 16 berth for Bruno Génésio's vibrant outfit. "It's the perfect evening, if such a thing can exist," said the Lille coach. "I congratulated them for the journey. They'll remember this forever."
