The much-anticipated final round of league phase fixtures lived up to its billing on a night of unmatched UEFA Champions League excitement.

There were storylines across all 18 simultaneous kick-offs – not to mention 64 goals in total – but Aston Villa and Lille securing automatic qualification for the round of 16, as well as Manchester City coming from the elimination zone to reach the knockout phase play-offs, were among the headlines. Manchester City secured the win they required to reach the knockout phase play-offs, recovering from Raphael Onyedika's emphatic opener at the end of the first half for Club Brugge.

Mateo Kovačić's precise finish and Joel Ordóñez's own goal transformed the scoreline inside 18 minutes of the restart, with visiting goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and Brandon Mechele then combining to deny Erling Haaland and half-time substitute Savinho.

The Brazil winger was City's inspiration, volleying in their third with 13 minutes remaining to cap a stirring comeback.

Stuttgart 1-4 Paris Saint-Germain

Highlights: Stuttgart 1-4 Paris

Ousmane Dembélé was the driving force for Paris as his hat-trick helped the French side secure a place in the knockout phase play-offs with an emphatic win at Stuttgart.

Bradley Barcola's early opener set the tone, with Dembélé registering twice before the break and once after it as he found the net for a seventh consecutive game in all competitions. Pacho’s late own goal reduced the deficit, but the result means that Stuttgart are eliminated.

Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic 

Highlights: Aston Villa 4-2 Celtic

Morgan Rogers became the first player in Champions League history to score twice in the opening five minutes as Villa snatched a top-eight spot with a thrilling win.

Jacob Ramsey hit a post after Rogers' opening salvo, before Adam Idah capitalised with two goals of his own in three minutes to make it 2-2 at the break.

Ollie Watkins added his first goal in the competition on the hour, and although he then missed a penalty, he redeemed himself with an unselfish set-up for Rogers, who completed his hat-trick and Villa's victory in added time.

Brest 0-3 Real Madrid

Highlights: Brest 0-3 Real Madrid

Rodrygo struck twice for a second Champions League game in a row as Real Madrid once again demonstrated their attacking flair to end the league phase on a high.

The Brazil forward opened the scoring by skilfully weaving through the Brest defence and finding the net via the far post. Jude Bellingham then tapped in to finish a counterattack early in the second half, before Rodrygo reacted first to Marco Bizot's save from Kylian Mbappé to blast in the visitors' third.

Madrid finished 11th in the league phase table, ahead of Bayern in the standings on away wins.

Knockout phase play-off draw

Girona 1-2 Arsenal

Highlights: Girona 1-2 Arsenal

Jorginho's penalty and Ethan Nwaneri's stunning solo effort helped Arsenal recover from a goal down and end the league phase with a 2-1 victory that confirmed their place in the round of 16.

Arnaut Danjuma fired Girona into a surprise lead when the forward ghosted in behind Arsenal's defence and fired past Neto. However, the visitors equalised after Arnau Martínez fouled Thomas Partey in the box, allowing Jorginho to coolly dispatch the subsequent penalty.

Nwaneri's brilliant left-footed strike then sealed the win, despite Raheem Sterling missing a spot kick for the Gunners late on.

Barcelona 2-2 Atalanta

Highlights: Barcelona 2-2 Atalanta

Atalanta twice came from behind to deny Barcelona the victory that would have sealed top spot for the Blaugrana.

Lamine Yamal converted from close range after collecting a Raphinha pass, but Éderson levelled with a powerful effort. Ronald Araújo's precise header from an inswinging Raphinha corner then looked to have secured maximum points, only for Mario Pašalić to hit back seven minutes later for La Dea, who go into the knockout phase play-offs after missing out on the top eight.

Bayern München 3-1 Slovan Bratislava

Highlights: Bayern München 3-1 S. Bratislava

Thomas Müller headed in Joshua Kimmich's pinpoint cross to inspire Bayern to a win as he scored his 56th Champions League goal.

Manuel Neuer quickly pulled off a stellar save at the opposite end to deny the visitors an equaliser, and Bayern built on that just after the hour mark, when Harry Kane emulated Müller's header by guiding in Jamal Musiala's inswinging cross.

Kingsley Coman hit the third as he raced onto Serge Gnabry's rebound. Marko Tolić's superb strike from a tight angle was only a consolation for the visitors.

Inter 3-0 Monaco

Highlights: Inter 3-0 Monaco

Inter earned their sixth win of the campaign and a seventh clean sheet with a dominant display at Stadio San Siro.

The hosts took early control of the game and never looked back, Lautaro Martínez converting either side of Christian Mawissa's dismissal – his first goal a powerful penalty in the fourth minute, and the second a calm finish after Nicolò Barella's set-up.

The Argentina forward added a third after the break, following in Henrikh Mkhitaryan's strike to seal the victory.

PSV Eindhoven 3-2 Liverpool

Highlights: PSV 3-2 Liverpool

PSV booked their knockout phase play-off place after an entertaining victory against Liverpool, who finished top of the league phase standings despite dropping their first points of the campaign.

The hosts twice came from behind, a silky Johan Bakayoko effort cancelling out Cody Gakpo's penalty. Harvey Elliott restored the visitors' lead, but PSV quickly replied again through Ismael Saibari.

Peter Bosz's side then snatched what proved to be the winner in first-half added time, with Ricardo Pepi flicking in Mauro Júnior's deflected cross. The Reds had Amara Nallo sent off late on.

Juventus 0-2 Benfica

Highlights: Juventus 0-2 Benfica

Benfica ensured a knockout phase play-off place after a convincing win against Juventus in Turin.

Alexander Bah teed up last week's hat-trick hero Vangelis Pavlidis to slot the visitors ahead after 16 minutes, but the Greek forward was denied a second after a fine reaction save from Mattia Perin before the break.

The Juventus goalkeeper was beaten in the 80th minute, though, when Orkun Kökçü took advantage of a defensive lapse to double Benfica's advantage.

Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 Sparta Praha

Highlights: Leverkusen 2-0 Sparta Praha

Leverkusen booked their spot in the round of 16 courtesy of victory against Sparta.

Jeremie Frimpong's clever pull-back was tucked in by Florian Wirtz for the opener in the first half, the former serving up his fifth assist of this season's campaign and the latter notching his sixth goal.

The hosts continued to dominate in the second period and were rewarded when Nathan Tella slotted in a rebound after Peter Vindahl had saved Alejandro Grimaldo's free-kick.

Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Highlights: B. Dortmund 3-1 Shakhtar

Dortmund ended the league phase on a high note as victory against Shakhtar booked their place in the knockout phase play-offs.

Serhou Guirassy opened the scoring when he diverted Karim Adeyemi's shot into the net from close range, and he doubled his tally shortly before the break with a confident finish from Julian Brandt's pass.

Marlon charged down Gregor Kobel's clearance early in the second half to give Shakhtar hope, but a superb goal from Ramy Bensebaini sealed the win.

Salzburg 1-4 Atlético de Madrid

Highlights: Salzburg 1-4 Atleti

Atleti clinched their spot in the round of 16 thanks to a clinical victory that secured a top-eight finish.

An early goal from Giuliano Simeone set the tone for a dominant display, and the forward soon turned provider for Antoine Griezmann to add a second.

The Frenchman buried another on the stroke of half-time, with Marcos Llorente's powerful drive in the second half sealing a deserved win and rendering Adam Daghim's fine late strike a mere consolation for Salzburg.

GNK Dinamo 2-1 AC Milan

Highlights: GNK Dinamo 2-1 Milan

Marko Pjaca's second-half finish earned Dinamo a famous win against Milan in Zagreb, but it was not enough to secure progress to the knockout phase.

Martin Baturina put the hosts ahead in the 19th minute, rolling the ball through the legs of Mike Maignan after winning possession in the Milan half, and the dismissal of Yunus Musah gave further encouragement to Fabio Cannavaro's side.

Christian Pulišić offered Milan some second-half hope, but Pjaca's goal earned Dinamo their third win of the campaign.

Lille 6-1 Feyenoord

Highlights: Lille 6-1 Feyenoord

Lille went straight through to the last 16 after a goal-filled spectacle against Feyenoord.

Osame Sahraoui and Santiago Giménez exchanged early efforts, and although the match was finely poised at the break following the first of two Gernot Trauner own goals, Lille pulled clear in the second half.

A four-goal spell across 24 minutes – including efforts from Angel Gomes, Jonathan David and Rémy Cabella – ultimately earned the home side a comfortable win that secured a top-eight berth.

Sporting CP 1-1 Bologna

Highlights: Sporting CP 1-1 Bologna

Sporting CP survived a scare to battle back against Bologna and earn the point they needed to progress to the knockout phase play-offs.

The visitors struck first, with Tommaso Pobega heading in from a corner to stun the Estádio José Alvalade into silence.

The hosts were left frustrated until the 77th minute, when Conrad Harder bundled in from João Simões' cross for a priceless equaliser.

Substitute Guélor Kanga struck a sensational second-half winner as Crvena Zvezda earned their second victory of the campaign.

Silas mis-kicked when well placed for the visitors in a first half of few openings, before Kanga's stunning long-range effort denied the home side a first point in the league phase.

Arjan Malić scored the only goal just before half-time to secure a second league phase win for Sturm, bundling in from close range at the back post after a corner had been flicked on.

Christoph Baumgartner twice went close for the visitors, while William Bøving and Yussuf Poulsen both found the net only to see their efforts ruled out. Both teams had been eliminated prior to kick-off.
