Liverpool were the first team to guarantee their place in either the UEFA Champions League round of 16 or knockout phase play-offs. The Reds secured a knockout phase berth on the basis of the results on Matchday 5, including their own 2-0 victory over Real Madrid.
Barcelona were the only team to join them on Matchday 6 as they recorded their fifth win of the league phase by overcoming Dortmund 3-2.
