Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League set a new competition record for goals and was also high-scoring from a Fantasy perspective.
UEFA.com takes a look at those top-performing players with eight – three more than the previous matchday – accumulating over 15 points and five of those reached the 18-point mark on #UCLfantasy, presented by Playstation.
GOALKEEPERS
Having started Liverpool’s last three Champions League matches in the absence of Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher (€4.6m) continues to impress. The Republic of Ireland international registered a third consecutive league phase clean sheet on Matchday 5 on his way to 12 Fantasy points, the most of any goalkeeper, largely due to a penalty from Kylian Mbappé as Liverpool beat holders Real Madrid 2-0.
Despite conceding three late goals in Eindhoven, Shakhtar Donetsk's Dmytro Riznyk (€5.0m) still managed to pick up six points after making an incredible 15 saves against PSV, more than any other goalkeeper across a single matchday this season.
Yann Sommer (€5.5m) made it five league phase games without conceding a goal as Inter defeated Leipzig. With 33 points Sommer is the top-scoring Fantasy keeper but Aston Villa's Emiliano Martínez (€5.0m) is just one point behind after claiming his fourth clean sheet in a goalless draw with Juventus.
DEFENDERS
Two Bundesliga defenders gained 18-point scores on Matchday 5: Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo (€5.6m) and Minjae Kim (€5.0m) of Bayern München. Both were on the scoresheet against Salzburg and Paris Saint-Germain respectively and while Grimaldo added an assist in Leverkusen's 5-0 victory, Kim was named Player of the Match.
The three highest-scoring Matchday 5 defenders included a third player from a German club, Dortmund full-back Ramy Bensebaini (€4.3m). The budget-priced Algerian scored the second goal in a 3-0 win at GNK Dinamo and, combined with a clean sheet, seven ball recoveries and the Player of the Match award, finished with 16 points.
Another Player of the Match winner was Pau Cubarsí (€4.5m), who secured seven ball recoveries and a score of 11 points in Barcelona's 3-0 triumph at home to Brest. Team-mate Gerard Martín (€3.9m) delivered an assist for ten points, a total matched by full-backs Federico Dimarco (€5.5m) of Inter and Liverpool's Conor Bradley (€4.2m).
MIDFIELDERS
Consistently one of the top-performing Fantasy players this season, Florian Wirtz (€7.7m) continued his brilliant campaign on Tuesday, scoring twice and setting up another for Leverkusen. The German international was also named Player of the Match for the fourth time in five matchdays, and his 19-point return means he is now out on his own as the highest-scoring Fantasy player in all positions with 57 points.
Indeed, all of the top three highest points scorers this season are midfielders, with PSV's Malik Tillman (€7.1m) up into third place after 36 points since the start of Matchday 4. Tillman backed up his 19 points against Girona with 17 on Matchday 5 following a quickfire double that helped inspire a late turnaround for PSV.
There were plenty of stand-out Fantasy performers in Atlético de Madrid's 6-0 victory at Sparta Praha, particularly Marcos Llorente (€6.4m). The midfielder produced two assists, a goal from outside the box and ten ball recoveries, leading to a final score of 18 points. Lille's Ngal'Ayel Mukau (€4.5m) scored twice against Bologna, recording 16 Fantasy points, while Bukayo Saka (€8.9m) scored one and set up another as Arsenal won 5-1 at Sporting CP.
FORWARDS
Although a number of premium assets boosted their goal tallies on Matchday 5, Charles De Ketelaere (€5.5m) stood out from a Fantasy point of view, recording five attacking returns in Atalanta's 6-1 win away to Young Boys. The Belgian registered two goals and a hat-trick of assists, his Matchday 5 total of 19 points unmatched among forwards and equalled only by Wirtz overall.
Despite Manchester City drawing 3-3 against Feyenoord after being three goals in front, almost half of Fantasy managers had reason to cheer as Erling Haaland (€11.0m) scored twice, earning 12 points. Also finding the net twice on Matchday 5 was Robert Lewandowski (€9.5m), who became only the third player to reach 100 Champions League goals.
Matchday 5 also brought a first double-figure points return of the season for Julián Alvarez (€8.0m), whose two goals and Player of the Match award for Atlético de Madrid helped him to 14 points. Mateo Retegui (€5.3m) achieved the same feat for Atalanta, although he ended with 13 Fantasy points having scored both of his goals inside the box.
