Form guide

PSV

Record vs Ukrainian clubs: W5 D3 L6 F14 A17
Home record vs Ukrainian clubs: W2 D2 L3

PSV's last games against a team from Ukraine came in the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League group stage, when they won 2-0 at Chornomorets Odesa but lost 0-1 at home.

That defeat in Eindhoven made it three losses in PSV's last four games against Ukrainian clubs; the away win is their only success in five (D1 L3).

A 2-1 win against Dynamo Kyiv in the 2000/01 Champions League first group stage is PSV's only home victory in their last six games against Ukrainian teams (D2 L3).

This is PSV's 18th appearance in the Champions League proper – level with Ajax's Dutch record – and a second in succession.

The Eindhoven club returned to the group stage last season for the first time since 2018/19, finishing second behind Arsenal in Group B before losing to eventual finalists Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 (1-1 h, 0-2 a).

That was PSV's first knockout appearance since 2015/16, and just the fifth time they had progressed beyond the initial Champions League group stage.

A 1-0 home victory against Lens on Matchday 4 last season ended PSV's 15-game run without a win (D6 L9) in the group stage, since a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moskva on Matchday 6 in 2015/16.

The victories against Lens last season and Girona this are PSV's only successes in 13 Champions League home matches (D7 L4) since that defeat of CSKA.

Having finished second in the Eredivisie for three successive seasons, in 2023/24 PSV claimed their first league title since 2017/18. Peter Bosz's side won 29 of their 34 league games, losing only one, their final tally of 91 points eclipsing Ajax's record of 89 set in 1997/98.

Shakhtar

Record vs Dutch clubs: W2 D1 L5 F10 A20
Away record vs Dutch clubs: W1 D0 L3

Shakhtar's last four games with Dutch clubs have all come against Feyenoord, most recently in the 2022/23 Europa League round of 16, when a 1-1 home draw preceded a 7-1 away loss – the joint-heaviest margin of defeat in the competition.

The Pitmen's only victories against Eredivisie opposition came in their previous fixtures against Feyenoord, 2-1 away and 3-1 at home in the 2017/18 Champions League group stage.

That win in Rotterdam is the only one of Shakhtar's four games in Netherlands they have not lost, with 11 goals conceded in those three defeats.

The Ukrainian side are making an eighth successive appearance in the Champions League proper, and a 19th overall. They have featured in all but one of the last 15 seasons.

The Pitmen have failed to progress to the knockout rounds in each of the last six campaigns.

In 2023/24, Shakhtar were third in Group H, bowing out with a decisive 5-3 defeat at Porto on Matchday 6.

That sent them into the Europa League but Marseille proved too strong in their knockout round play-off, winning 3-1 in France after a 2-2 first-leg draw.

Shakhtar's most successful Champions League campaign came in 2010/11, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing 6-1 on aggregate to eventual champions Barcelona.

A 3-2 win at Antwerp on Matchday 2 last season is one of only two victories in Shakhtar's last 13 away games in the Champions League proper (D3 L8).

Victory at Antwerp is also one of only two in Shakhtar's last 14 European away matches – a sequence that includes ten defeats.

Under Marino Pušić, who was appointed in October, Shakhtar won their 15th Ukrainian Premier League in 2023/24 and also lifted the Ukrainian Cup for a record 14th time; it was their ninth domestic double.

Links and trivia

Pušić was head coach of Twente in 2018/19 and also worked as an assistant at the Dutch club in 2017/18 as well as NAC Breda, AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord.

Lassina Traoré was an Ajax player between 2019 and 2021, scoring nine goals in 22 Eredivisie games.

Traoré's Ajax team-mates included Sergiño Dest and Noa Lang.
