This is the teams' first meeting.

Form guide

LOSC Lille

Record vs Spanish clubs: W3 L6 L6 F10 A18
Home record vs Spanish clubs: W2 D5 L1

Lille drew 0-0 at home to Sevilla on Matchday 3 of the 2021/22 Champions League before a 2-1 victory in Spain, a result that ended an eight-game winless run against Liga opponents (D3 L5).

LOSC have, however, lost only one of their eight home matches against Spanish visitors (W2 D5), going down 0-1 to Valencia in the 2012/13 Champions League group stage.

The last of Lille's seven Champions League group appearances came in 2021/22, when they won their section before losing to holders Chelsea in the round of 16 (0-2 a, 1-2 h).

Those were their most recent games in the competition before this season's third qualifying round, when they beat Fenerbahçe 2-1 at home and drew 1-1 away after extra time to progress.

Lille then edged through a tight play-off against Slavia Praha (2-0 h, 1-2 a).

LOSC took part in the UEFA Europa Conference League in 2023/24, winning their section unbeaten (W4 D2) and then getting the better of Sturm Graz in the round of 16 (3-0 a, 1-1 h) before losing to Aston Villa in the quarter-finals (1-2 a, 2-1 h aet, 3-4 pens).

The French side have won seven of their last eight home European matches (D1) and are unbeaten since that second-leg loss against Chelsea in 2022 – their only home reverse in 12 games (W8 D3).

Les Dogues – who replaced coach Paulo Fonseca with Bruno Génésio in the summer – were fourth in Ligue 1 in 2023/24, their highest finish since claiming their fourth league title in 2020/21.

Real Madrid

Record vs French clubs: W20 D7 L9 F70 A44
Away record vs French clubs: W6 D3 L8

Madrid last faced French opposition in the 2021/22 round of 16, recovering from a 0-1 loss at Paris Saint-Germain and falling behind in the return – Mbappé scoring both goals – to win 3-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu with a Karim Benzema hat-trick in the final half-hour.

The first-leg loss in Paris is one of only two in Madrid's last 15 matches against French opposition (W9 D4). They have, however, lost their last two games in France and won only four of the last 12, losing six.

Madrid claimed their record-extending 15th European Cup in 2023/24 with a 2-0 final victory against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Carlo Ancelotti's side had finished top of their section after winning all six group games for a record-equalling third time. Leipzig were overcome in the round of 16 (1-0 a, 1-1 a) before epic ties against holders Manchester City (3-3 h, 1-1 a, 4-3 pens) and Bayern München (2-2 a, 2-1 h).

Madrid did not lose a game in a European Cup campaign for the first time in their history (W9 D4).

Madrid are in the Champions League proper for the 29th time in 2024/25, a competition record they share with Barcelona. They last missed out in 1996/97 and have qualified for the knockout rounds in all 28 campaigns.

The Spanish side have lost eight of their last 29 Champions League away games, winning 11. They have been beaten in four of the last 15.

Debutant Mbappé was on target in a 2-0 win against Atalanta in the UEFA Super Cup in Warsaw on 14 August. It was Madrid's sixth triumph in the competition, a new record.

The Merengues claimed their second La Liga championship in three years and 36th overall in 2023/24.
