Form guide

PSV

Record vs Portuguese clubs: W4 D7 L6 F23 A27
Home record vs Portuguese clubs: W3 D4 L1

PSV last faced Portuguese opponents in the 2021/22 Champions League play-offs, losing 1-2 at Benfica in the away first leg and on aggregate.

That goalless second leg against Benfica made it three draws in PSV's last six games at home to Portuguese visitors (W2 L1).

This is PSV's 18th appearance in the Champions League proper – level with Ajax's Dutch record – and a second in succession.

The Eindhoven club returned to the group stage last season for the first time since 2018/19, finishing second behind Arsenal in Group B only to lose out to eventual finalists Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 (1-1 h, 0-2 a).

That was PSV's first knockout appearance since 2015/16, and just the fifth time they had progressed beyond the initial Champions League group stage.

A 1-0 home victory against Lens on Matchday 4 last season ended PSV's 15-game run without a win (D6 L9) in the group stage, since a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moskva on Matchday 6 in 2015/16.

Victory against Lens is also PSV's only success in 11 Champions League home matches (D6 L4) since that defeat of CSKA.

Having finished second in the Eredivisie for three successive seasons, in 2023/24 PSV claimed their first league title since 2017/18. Peter Bosz's side won 29 of their 34 league games, losing only one, their final tally of 91 points eclipsing Ajax's record of 89 set in 1997/98.

Sporting CP

Record vs Dutch clubs: W12 D3 L5 F42 A33
Away record vs Dutch clubs: W5 D1 L4

Sporting were beaten 1-5 at home and 2-4 away by Ajax in the 2021/22 Champions League group stage, making it three defeats by Eredivisie opponents in their last four games.

The Lions won ten of their first 11 games against Dutch clubs, home and away, but that 2019 win against PSV is one of only two in their subsequent nine matches (D3 L4).

Sporting won four of their first five away games against Dutch clubs (L1), but have one victory and three defeats in the last five.

The Lions are making their 11th appearance in the Champions League proper, and a third in four seasons.

The most recent came in 2022/23, when the Lions finished third in their section behind Tottenham and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sporting have lost ten of their last 15 away matches in the Champions League; a 3-0 win at Frankfurt on Matchday 1 two seasons ago is one of only three in their last 17 away games in the competition proper (D3 L11).

Second in their Europa League section behind eventual champions Atalanta in 2023/24, Rúben Amorim's side beat Young Boys 4-2 on aggregate in the knockout round play-offs only to again lose out to Atalanta in the round of 16 (2-3 agg).

Sporting have lost just three of their last 12 away European games (W4 D5).

Sporting claimed their 20th league title – and a second in four years, having not lifted the crown between 2001/02 and 2020/21 – last season.
