Form guide

Club Brugge

Record vs German clubs: W10 D7 L16 F31 A46
Home record vs German clubs: W9 D2 L6

This is Club Brugge's first game against a German club since a 0-0 draw at Bayer Leverkusen on Matchday 6 of the 2022/23 Champions League.

A 2-1 victory at Leipzig on Matchday 2 of the 2021/22 Champions League and a 1-0 win against Leverkusen the following season have made it two wins in Club Brugge's last four games against German clubs (D1 L1). Before beating Leipzig Club Brugge had won only one of their previous 13 fixtures against German clubs, home and away (D3 L9).

Club Brugge had lost four successive games at home to German visitors before beating Leverkusen in 2022. They won seven of their first eight home matches against Bundesliga clubs, losing one, but that Leverkusen success is one of only two victories in the subsequent nine (D2 L5).

This is Club Brugge's 11th Champions League group stage campaign – one short of Anderlecht's Belgian record.

The most recent of those came in 2022/23, a club-record fifth in succession, and one to remember as the Belgian side claimed 11 points to finish second in Group B behind Porto and reach the knockout stages for the first time. Benfica proved too strong in the round of 16, however, winning 2-0 in Bruges and 5-1 in Lisbon.

They have won three of their last 20 home matches in the Champions League proper (D6 L11).

European Cup runners-up to Liverpool in 1978, Club Brugge spent 2023/24 in the UEFA Europa Conference League, coming through three qualifying rounds to reach the group stage. Wins in five of their six games gave them first place in their section and direct passage to the round of 16, where they beat Molde 4-2 on aggregate; PAOK were overcome 3-0 on aggregate in the last eight but Fiorentina proved too strong in the semi-finals, winning 4-3 over two legs.

Club Brugge were unbeaten at home in Europe last season (W6 D3).

Champions of Belgium for the 19th time in 2023/24 – their fourth title in five years – Club Brugge appointed Nicky Hayen as their permanent head coach in June. He had succeeded Ronny Deila on a temporary basis in March, leading the club to their league success.

Dortmund

Record vs Belgian clubs: W8 D2 L4 F21 A13
Away record vs Belgian clubs: W4 D0 L3

Dortmund have not faced a team from Belgium since those 2020 games against Club Brugge.

BVB have won their last four games in Belgium, having been beaten in each of their first three matches in the country. They have kept a clean sheet in each of those victories; in contrast, the three defeats featured one goal scored and eight conceded.

Dortmund are in the Champions League proper for the 19th time overall and the ninth successive season. All but two of their last 11 campaigns have now extended into the knockout rounds.

In 2023/24, Edin Terzić's team finished first in Group F ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle before beating PSV Eindhoven (3-1 aggregate) and Atlético de Madrid (5-4 agg) to set up a reunion with Paris in the last four. BVB won 1-0 both home and away to reach a third European Cup final, but Real Madrid proved too strong at Wembley, running out 2-0 winners.

Last season's wins at Newcastle (2-0), Milan (3-1) and Paris (1-0) have made it 11 victories in BVB's last 35 European away matches (D7 L17), all those wins coming in their last 27 (D3 L13).

European champions in 1997 and runners-up to Bayern München in the 2013 final at Wembley, Dortmund have been eliminated in the last 16 in three of their last six Champions League campaigns.

BVB finished fifth in the Bundesliga in 2023/24, 27 points behind champions Leverkusen. It was their lowest league placing since finishing seventh in 2014/15.

Nuri Şahin replaced Terzić as coach in the summer.
