These sides are both hoping to end lengthening runs without a semi-final appearance, Atlético having not reached the last four since 2016/17 and Dortmund last featuring in 2012/13. Both teams finished top of their groups with Atleti seeing off last season's runners-up Inter on penalties in the round of 16 while Dortmund overcame PSV.

Experience differs in the two dug-outs with Diego Simeone looking for his 50th victory as a coach in the competition while 41-year-old Edin Terzić is only in his second full season at the BVB helm. Atlético de Madrid have experienced a rollercoaster of a season, but one thing that has been consistent is their incredible home form in the Champions League, and it seems Simeone's side just can't lose at the Metropolitano in Europe. Coming off the impressive comeback and penalty shoot-out victory against Inter, they will step out with plenty of confidence this Wednesday against Dortmund. It's something they will need to take advantage of as it's fair to believe, looking at their home and away record, that this game will be key if Atleti are to reach the semi-finals.

Making a prediction is very difficult for me because Dortmund have shown two faces this season. On one hand, in their best moments, BVB can dominate any European team with assertive football (as seen in the first phase against PSV Eindhoven in the last match). On the other hand, the team can go through stages where they let the opponents into the game. If Dortmund can avoid defeat in Madrid, I am confident they will advance.
