Having won their three most recent games against Arsenal by the same 5-1 scoreline, Bayern might have felt a little short-changed following the 2-2 draw in London, but given the sides' contrasting fortunes in their domestic campaigns, it was a heartening result for the Bavarians, who remain unbeaten in their last 14 UEFA home matches (W11 D3).

"Our fans can make a difference; we've taken a small step," said Bayern's England forward Harry Kane, who harbours an extra motivation to progress. "Being English, [the final at] Wembley, being my national stadium, is a big dream. But there's a long way to go." Leandro Trossard, scorer of the Gunners' first-leg equaliser, said: "It will be hard over there. If we play at our best level, we can beat anyone."

The outlook on Bayern's toughest campaign in over a decade has shifted somewhat since last week's first-leg draw and, after following it up with a win against Köln on Saturday, the fans spent their post-match celebrations chanting “Europapokal!” – European Cup. Injuries continue to be an inescapable impediment, but the draw in London proved that the six-time European champions are capable of big-game performances, which is why optimism is rife as they look to end a three-year absence from the competition's final four.

Last week was a game of two halves from Arsenal's perspective and if they are to progress on Wednesday evening, the Gunners need to look to the second 45 minutes for their blueprint, i.e. a patient, controlled and mature performance. It is Bayern's last chance of silverware and they are formidable at home, plus Arsenal will need to bounce back immediately from domestic disappointment at the weekend. Mikel Arteta always talks up the character of the squad and this will likely be the biggest test of it this season.
