Group B runners-up PSV Eindhoven will be looking to turn the tables on section winners Arsenal as the teams conclude their autumn European campaigns.

Both clubs guaranteed a place in the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds on Matchday 5, Arsenal – who beat PSV 4-0 in north London on Matchday 1 – putting six goals without reply past Lens while PSV came from two down to win 3-2 at Sevilla, substitute Ricardo Pepi scoring an added-time winner.

Arsenal marked their first Champions League match since 2017 with an emphatic win on Matchday 1, goals from Bukayo Saka (8), Leandro Trossard (20) and Gabriel Jesus (38) in the first half added to in the second by Martin Ødegaard (70) in a 4-0 victory that was PSV's heaviest defeat in England.

The teams were paired together in last season's Europa League group stage, Granit Xhaka's 71st-minute strike earning Mikel Arteta's Arsenal a 1-0 home win in their opening fixture. PSV, coached by Ruud van Nistelrooy, reversed the result a week later thanks to second-half strikes from Joey Veerman (56) and Luuk de Jong (63).

The English club went on to finish first in Group A on 15 points, two more than runners-up PSV; both sides were eliminated in their first knockout tie, PSV losing 3-2 on aggregate to eventual winners Sevilla in the knockout round play-offs and Arsenal going out on penalties to Sporting CP in the round of 16.

The clubs had met six times previously, all in the Champions League, Arsenal winning twice and PSV once with three games drawn. The last encounters before 2022/23 came in the 2006/07 round of 16 when Ronald Koeman's PSV overcame Arsène Wenger's Arsenal with a 1-0 home win followed by a 1-1 draw in London in which the Dutch club's Brazilian defender Alex scored at both ends, his 83rd-minute equaliser for the visitors bringing the curtain down on Arsenal's first European campaign in their new stadium.

The Gunners took four points off PSV in both the 2002/03 first group stage (4-0 a, 0-0 h) and the 2004/05 group stage (1-0 h, 1-1 a).

Form guide

PSV

Record vs English clubs: W11 D9 L17 F35 A46
Home record vs English clubs: W7 D6 L6

Last season's win against Arsenal is PSV's only success in eight matches against Premier League opponents, home and away (D3 L4).

PSV have lost four of their last seven home games against English visitors, winning two.

The most recent of PSV's 16 Champions League group campaigns came in 2018/19, when they finished fourth in their section having collected only two points.

The Eindhoven club have lost three times in qualifying since then, including play-off defeats at the hands of Benfica in 2021/22 (1-2 a, 0-0 h) and Rangers last season (2-2 a, 0-1 h).

PSV were second behind Arsenal in Europa League Group A in 2022/23 having transferred across from the Champions League, winning four of their six games, before eventual champions Sevilla ended their run in the knockout round play-offs despite a second-leg fightback (0-3 a, 2-0 h).

Second in the Eredivisie for the third season in a row in 2022/23, finishing runners-up to Feyenoord after two campaigns behind Ajax, PSV kicked off this European campaign in the Champions League third qualifying round, sweeping past Sturm Graz (4-1 h, 3-1 a) with De Jong scoring three goals in the tie.

Beaten by Rangers in the 2022/23 play-offs, PSV turned the tables at the same stage this season, another 2-2 away draw in the first leg preceding a 5-1 home second-leg success in Eindhoven.

De Jong's second-leg header against Rangers made him the first player in PSV's history to score in five consecutive European matches. Willy van der Kuijlen, Ralf Edström, Gerrie Deijkers, Romário and Balázs Dzsudzsák had all scored in four European games in a row.

PSV kicked off the group stage with a 4-0 loss at Arsenal; after drawing 2-2 at home to Sevilla, they picked up four points from their two games against Lens (1-1 a, 1-0 h) and then staged that comeback victory in Spain last time out.

The win at Sevilla took PSV into the round of 16 for the first time since 2015/16.

That Matchday 4 victory against Lens ended PSV's 15-game run without a win in the Champions League group stage, home and away, since a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moskva on Matchday 6 in 2015/16; their record between those two results was D5 L9.

Victory against Lens was also PSV's first in nine Champions League home matches (D4 L4), since that defeat of CSKA.

The Matchday 2 draw with Sevilla is the only one of PSV's last seven home European matches they have not won, scoring 19 goals in those six victories; last season's defeat by Rangers is the only reverse in their last ten (W7 D2).

Arsenal

Record vs Dutch clubs: W8 D7 L4 F27 A12
Away record vs Dutch clubs: W3 D3 L3

Last season's defeat in Eindhoven is Arsenal's only loss in their last eight against Dutch clubs (W5 D2).

The Gunners have not won in the Netherlands since a 2-0 victory at Twente in the 2008/09 Champions League third qualifying round first leg (6-0 aggregate) – they have since drawn one game and lost the other.

This is Arsenal's 20th Champions League group stage campaign – second only to Manchester United's 25 among English clubs – but a first since 2016/17, their 19th in a row, all under Wenger.

In that 2016/17 campaign, the Gunners lost in the round of 16 for the seventh season running, going down 5-1 away and at home against Bayern München.

Arsenal's most successful European campaign in recent years came in 2018/19 when, with Unai Emery in charge, they reached the Europa League final only to lose 4-1 to London rivals Chelsea in Baku.

In 2022/23, now coached by Arteta, Arsenal finished first in their Europa League section to earn direct passage to the round of 16, where they lost 5-3 on penalties to Sporting CP in the home second leg (2-2 a, 1-1 h aet).

This season, after beating PSV Arsenal went down 2-1 at Lens but have won the last three, against Sevilla (2-1 a, 2-0 h) and Lens (6-0 h) – in the latter match, Arsenal became the first side to have five different scorers in the first half of a Champions League game.

Arsenal have won 12 of their last 19 away European matches, losing only three – although those defeats have come in their last seven fixtures.

The Matchday 4 win at Sevilla was just the Gunners' fourth in their last ten away Champions League matches, with five defeats.

Champions League runners-up in 2006, when they lost 2-1 to Barcelona at the Stade de France, Arsenal were second in the Premier League last season, five points behind Manchester City. It was their highest final league position since also finishing as runners-up, to Leicester, in 2015/16.

The only matches they have failed to win have been in Europe, the defeat at Arsenal and 2-2 draws against Rangers in the play-offs and Sevilla on Matchday 2 plus the 1-1 draw at Lens.

Bosz's first match at the helm ended in a first trophy, his new side defeating Dutch champions Feyenoord 1-0 in the Johan Cruyff Schaal on 4 August thanks to a goal by Lang.
