Galatasaray have been building momentum in the UEFA Champions League although their Group A aspirations will come under the microscope as section leaders Bayern München visit Istanbul on Matchday 3.

Form guide

Galatasaray

Record vs German clubs: W7 D13 L10 F31 A46
Home record vs German clubs: W2 D9 L3

This is Galatasaray's first game against a German club since a 2-0 loss at Schalke in the 2018/19 Champions League group stage, a result that made it three defeats in four matches against Bundesliga opponents (D1). They had drawn 0-0 at home.

Gala's last four wins against German teams have all come away, most recently at Schalke in the 2012/13 Champions League round of 16 second leg (4-3 aggregate). They have not beaten Bundesliga visitors in Istanbul since a 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup second round second leg; their subsequent home record is D5 L3.

Galatasaray are making their 17th appearance in the Champions League group stage – as many as all the other Turkish clubs put together.

The Istanbul club last featured in 2019/20, when they finished fourth in their section on two points having failed to win a game (D2 L4).

Galatasaray are the only team from Turkey to have reached a European Cup semi-final, in 1989.

Gala, who did not feature in UEFA competition in 2022/23, were beaten 7-2 on aggregate by PSV Eindhoven in the 2021/22 Champions League second qualifying round but went on to reach the Europa League round of 16, losing 2-1 against Barcelona over two legs.

Champions of Türkiye for a record 23rd time in 2022/23, finishing eight points clear of second-placed Fenerbahçe, Gala began this season with a 2-2 draw at Lithuanian side Žalgiris in the Champions League second qualifying round first leg. They progressed with a 1-0 home victory before easing past Olimpija Ljubljana of Slovenia in the third qualifying round (3-0 a, 1-0 h).

The Turkish team scored in added time to win both legs against Norwegian champions Molde in the play-offs, a 3-2 away triumph in which Norway midfielder Fredrik Midtsjø scored the last-gasp winner preceding a 2-1 home success with Angeliño getting the decisive goal.

The defeat by Barcelona two seasons ago is Cimbon's only loss in their last ten home European matches (W6 D3).

Galatasaray have, however, managed only two victories in their last 14 home matches in the Champions League, group stage to final (D6 L6).

Home and away, the Matchday 2 win in Manchester ended Gala's run of 12 Champions League group games without a victory (D4 L8), and was their first in the competition proper since a 3-0 home success against Lokomotiv Moskva in their opening game of the 2018/19 competition.

Bayern

Record v Turkish clubs: W5 D1 L0 F19 A2
Away record vs Turkish clubs: W2 D1 L0

Bayern have won all five of their games against Turkish teams since being held 1-1 at Galatasaray in that first round tie in 1972.

The Munich club's most recent visit brought a 3-1 win at Galatasaray's local rivals Beşiktaş in the 2017/18 Champions League round of 16 second leg. That completed an 8-1 aggregate win, Thomas Müller having scored twice in the Munich first leg and Kingsley Coman once.

Bayern had not conceded in four games against Turkish opponents until that tie at Beşiktaş; they had scored 15 goals of their own in those matches.

The German side have featured in the Champions League group stage in every season since 2008/09, reaching the knockout rounds in each one of those campaigns.

Overall, this is Bayern's 27th campaign in the Champions League proper, level with Porto and fewer only than Barcelona and Real Madrid (both 28).

Bayern are unbeaten in a record 36 Champions League group matches (W33 D3) and have won each of their last 15 group games, also a competition best.

In 2022/23, under Julian Nagelsmann, the Munich club became the first team to win all six games in the group stage on three occasions. They finished ahead of Inter Milan, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzeň in Group C before ousting Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 (1-0 a, 2-0 h) only, with Thomas Tuchel having succeeded Nagelsmann, to come up short against eventual champions Manchester City in the quarter-finals (0-3 a, 1-1 h).

Defeat at Manchester City in last season's quarter-final first leg is one of just two in Bayern's last 29 away Champions League matches (W22 D6); they have won 20 of the last 24 outside Munich.

Tuchel's team responded to their Champions League elimination by winning Bayern's 11th successive Bundesliga title, pipping Borussia Dortmund on the final day of the season.

The six-time European champions – who claimed their fifth European Cup in 2013 at Wembley, the venue for this season's final – have been eliminated in the last eight in the last three seasons but have reached the quarter-finals or better in 11 of their last 12 Champions League campaigns, the exception a last-16 elimination by Liverpool in 2018/19.
