The sides' last meeting came in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup in Monaco, Barcelona claiming the trophy for the fourth time with a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals late in each half from Lionel Messi (39) and Cesc Fàbregas (88). Porto ended with nine men after late red cards for Rolando and Fredy Guarín.

That made it four successive victories against Porto for Barça, who had lost three of the teams' first four meetings.

Porto won home (3-1) and away (1-0) in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup first round, and also triumphed 3-1 at home in the 1985/86 European Cup second round second leg – but lost the tie on away goals having gone down 2-0 in Spain.

Porto

Record vs Spanish clubs: W17 D6 L26 F59 A74
Home record vs Spanish clubs: W11 D3 L9

Porto have been paired with Atlético de Madrid in the group stage in each of the last two campaigns, losing 3-1 at home in 2021/22 but winning 2-1 on Matchday 6 last season.

The Dragons have won five of their last seven games against Spanish visitors, losing the other two – both to Atlético.

Porto are appearing in the Champions League group stage for the 27th time, level with Bayern München and one behind the competition record held by Barcelona and Real Madrid.

This is the Portuguese club's 12th appearance in the last 13 seasons, with five of their last six campaigns having extended into the knockout rounds.

The Dragons were edged out by eventual runners-up Inter in the 2022/23 round of 16, losing 1-0 in Milan before a 0-0 draw in Portugal. Porto had finished first in Group B ahead of Club Brugge, Bayer Leverkusen and Atlético de Madrid.

The Matchday 1 victory against Shakhtar made it 13 Porto wins in their last 29 matches in the Champions League proper (D4 L12).

A 4-0 Matchday 2 loss to Club Brugge last season is one of only three defeats in Porto's last 14 home games in the Champions League group stage, with ten victories in that sequence.

Porto were European champions in 1987 and 2004. They are the only Portuguese side to reach the Champions League final.

Barcelona

Record vs Portuguese clubs: W17 D5 L7 F50 A26
Away record vs Portuguese clubs: W5 D3 L5

Barcelona's last games against Portuguese opponents came in the 2021/22 group stage, when they lost 3-0 at Benfica on Matchday 2 before a goalless draw at the Camp Nou on Matchday 5. Those results played a decisive role as they finished third in the section behind the Lisbon club.

The defeat at Benfica ended the Blaugrana's 16-match unbeaten run against Portuguese opponents, home and away (W13 D3), since a 1-0 loss at Belenenses in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round.

This is Barcelona's 28th Champions League group stage campaign, a competition record they share with Real Madrid. They have featured every season since 2003/04.

Barcelona have twice won the European Cup at Wembley, the venue for this season's final; they beat Sampdoria 1-0 after extra time in 1992 to take the trophy for the first time, and also defeated Manchester United 3-1 in 2011.

The five-time European champions reached the quarter-finals or better every season between 2007/08 and 2019/20, winning the title in 2009, 2011 and 2015, but have failed to make the round of 16 in each of the last two campaigns.

Xavi's side were third in their section for the second season running in 2022/23, winning only two of their six games – both against Viktoria Plzeň – and losing three to finish behind Bayern München and eventual runners-up Inter Milan. Barcelona failed to score in three of their Group C games.

Barça's subsequent UEFA Europa League campaign lasted only one tie, Manchester United eliminating them 4-3 on aggregate (2-2 h, 1-2 a) in the knockout round play-offs.

Barça have won only 13 of their last 31 away matches in European competition (D9 L9), although they were unbeaten in eight (W5 D3) before losing at Benfica on Matchday 2 in 2021/22. Their away record since is W4 D1 L4.

The Catalan club claimed their 27th Liga title, and a first for four seasons, in 2022/23, finishing ten points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of the standings.
