City paid the price for failing to make the most of their first-half dominance in Germany as the hosts rallied magnificently in the second period to cancel out Riyad Mahrez's opener. Pep Guardiola's team are a formidable force at home in Europe, winning 21 and drawing two of their last 23 Champions League fixtures at the City of Manchester Stadium, but the former Bayern München boss is all too aware of Leipzig's ability on the counterattack.

While there was plenty in Leipzig's first-leg display to suggest they can trouble Guardiola's team in the return, City's formidable home form should see them through to the quarter-finals for the sixth consecutive campaign. Not since Lyon triumphed in the opening game of the 2018/19 group stage have the English side lost at home in this competition, while Brentford and Everton are the only teams to have collected points at the City of Manchester Stadium this season.

While the 1-1 draw against City leaves Leipzig with lots of options for the return leg in Manchester, the loss of two key players in Xaver Schlager and Christopher Nkunku as much as the 2-1 defeat at Borussia Dortmund have been bitter blows to Rose's side. The BVB setback effectively ended Leipzig's hopes of challenging for the Bundesliga title, and Nkunku will remain sidelined until April after tearing muscle fibres in his thigh while Schlager is out for at least two months with an ankle injury, adding to the already lengthy list of key players on the treatment table.

Pep Guardiola, Man City coach: "It's nice at the start of the season we are among the main favourites in this competition. The reality is it's 95 minutes on the pitch. Every team at this stage is really good. We have to impose our game, we have to win. [Winning trophies] is why we're here. I don't know any team or manager that didn't try to win a competition. Everyone wants it to win it, no exception."

Marco Rose, Leipzig coach: "We know what we’re up against. [We need] a great deal of confidence, courage, and having our best game of the season wouldn't go amiss either. Everyone knows what Erling Haaland can do. We defended quite well against him in the first leg, but you'll never be able to keep him completely quiet. It's not just about Erling, though – there are plenty of other world-class players on the pitch. We have to be wide awake."
