Tottenham have emerged triumphant in both their previous European ties with Milan, but they face an uphill task to maintain that perfect record after succumbing to a 1-0 first-leg defeat at San Siro. After failing to add to Brahim Díaz's early opener, however, the Rossoneri will need to keep Harry Kane quiet in north London to stand any chance of securing a first quarter-final appearance since 2012 – when they survived a gallant second-leg fightback by Spurs' fierce rivals Arsenal in the last 16.

Antonio Conte's return following surgery to remove his gallbladder could be a much-needed boost for Tottenham, who arrive at this game after two painful defeats against Sheffield United (FA Cup) and Wolves (Premier League). The injury crisis continues but Spurs certainly have enough attacking power to hurt a Milan side who also struggled at the weekend against Fiorentina in Serie A. Patience could be the key, and limiting the space for the dangerous Rafael Leão to counterattack.

Changing the system to a back three has restored defensive strength, with clean sheets against Atalanta, Monza and Tottenham in recent games. The Rossoneri will try to confirm their good form at the back and hit on the break with their fast-paced players as Tottenham will be the team needing to score following the first-leg result.

Don't forget that last season we were playing in the [Europa] Conference League. This season we're playing in the Champions League. We won our group and tomorrow we have the chance to beat Milan and go to the next round. If you ask me if I want to win the Champions League, I would say yes, but then there is the reality. We have to go game by game."

Stefano Pioli, Milan coach: "Tomorrow is a game of personality, we have to control it. They are fearsome in the offensive phase, they will play with intensity from the beginning. We must be prepared to control the game. We have a very small advantage but we will need to score goals and try to surprise our opponents."
