Dortmund's Edin Terzić and Chelsea's Graham Potter studied together for their UEFA Pro coaching licence in 2018, but their friendship may be tested when their sides meet in the round of 16. The Blues have had some disappointing results over the winter, but Terzić is hoping his former study buddy can turn things around: "I know Graham well and really like him. I have my fingers crossed for him for every game — with the exception of the two against us."

After a patchy start to the season left them sixth in the Bundesliga at Christmas, Dortmund have begun the New Year in emphatic fashion. As a club who thrive on emotion, the return of Sébastien Haller has had an immeasurable impact that goes beyond Dortmund producing six wins from a possible six in all competitions in 2023. Only an injury to rising star Youssoufa Moukoko has threatened to dampen the mood.

The current task for Graham Potter is to integrate a number of high-profile January signings into his plans; Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernández and João Félix have been added to the club's UEFA Champions League squad list. The Blues' domestic form suggests this is a work in progress, but Europe has been the one consistent positive note this season so they'll be hoping for some more good news against Dortmund.

Edin Terzić, Dortmund coach: "We need at least one win from the two legs to reach the next round and that will certainly be a little easier at home with the euphoria of 80,000 fans. I can sense the anticipation in everyone involved. It's not easy to analyse the tie. Chelsea have lost a few players and brought in key players. You don't know exactly how they will line up here. As ever, though, we must focus on ourselves."

Graham Potter, Chelsea coach: "It's the knockout stage of the Champions League, the pinnacle of the game. We're all looking forward to the match and understand the challenge that awaits us. We're really excited about it. They are a really organised team that attack well and play well."
