What happened in the first leg?

What many expected to happen. City dominated possession (68%) and Atlético did what Atlético do; they were compact, organised and resilient. Diego Simeone's men successfully navigated three-quarters of their assignment before Phil Foden came off the bench and made an instant impact, setting up Kevin De Bruyne for an excellent deadlock-breaking finish.

Expert predictions

Graham Hunter, Atlético reporter: It’s not just that Atleti trail an exceptional City 1-0 that’s troubling; their strikers are also suddenly out of form and José María Giménez and Héctor Herrera are struggle to be passed fit. No meaningful shots on target across their last two matches (both defeats) might mean Ángel Correa re-introduced into the XI. But Herrera brings order to the creative construction while Giménez, when paired with Stefan Savić, hugely improves Atleti’s defensive reliability.

Simon Hart, Man. City reporter: The latest stage of City’s Champions League quest is sandwiched between their two domestic showdowns with Liverpool. They threw everything at the Reds in Sunday’s 2-2 home draw, accumulating 181 sprints, their highest number in a Premier League game this season, so expect Pep Guardiola to shuffle his pack. City have scored in all but one of their last 16 away matches and, with a 1-0 lead and the inspirational Kevin De Bruyne in fine form, they can be confident of reaching a third semi-final.

Pep Guardiola, Manchester City coach: "It will be a different game, not like last week. They're at home with their fans behind them [...] At the Wanda they create problems, defend and counter. They will be more intense in the top half of the field than they were the other night. We adapt and if we're losing, we go with everything to get it back. If we're on top maybe we sit a bit deeper."
