What do you need to know?

Every Villarreal goal so far

UEFA Europa League holders Villarreal are in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2009, sealing their spot courtesy of a stunning 3-0 triumph at Juventus. European football's elite will have noted the performance, but will not have failed to recognise Bayern's 7-1 dismantling of Salzburg, either. Even so, the German side were outplayed in the away fixture and fortunate to escape with a draw – a source of real hope for Villarreal.

Starting line-ups

Villarreal: Rulli; Foyth, Albiol, Pau Torres, Estupiñan; Coquelin, Capoue, Parejo; Gerard Moreno, Danjuma, Lo Celso

Bayern: Neuer; Pavard, Upamecano, L. Hernandez, Davies; Kimmich, Musiala; Coman, Müller, Gnabry; Lewandowski

Away goals rule abolished

There has been a rule change for 2021/22: ties level after the second leg will go to extra time and a penalty shoot-out if required, irrespective of the number of away goals a team has scored.

Expert predictions

Graham Hunter, Villarreal reporter
"Against Bayern Munich we are capable, and we will have chances to win." Positive words from Unai Emery, who led Villarreal to UEFA Europa League glory last season and has steered Los Groguets into their first Champions League quarter-final in 13 years. So why not a win over Bayern? The Basque coach would have liked his talisman, Gerard Moreno, to have had more match time after injury and to be sure of the availability of the pacy Samuel Chukwueze. They want a win, but a draw wouldn't faze them.

Jordan Maciel, Bayern reporter
Within touching distance of a tenth consecutive Bundesliga title, Bayern are on course to achieve their minimum goal for the season. However, the true measure of the success of their campaign is how they perform in the UEFA Champions League – starting with this tie in Villarreal. The six-time European champions are clear favourites for this contest, but there can be no complacency at this stage.

View from the camps

Julian Nagelsmann, Bayern coach: "Villarreal have a coach with a lot of experience at winning on the international stage. The team are very experienced and we will need to figure out how to break them down. However, I am confident that we will be successful."

Unai Emery, Villarreal coach: "We respect Bayern a lot and we will look to make the most of our strengths. We will play the 90 minutes at home with the aim of staying alive in the tie. The opportunity is here for us to play them and to try to gain an advantage over them. We must enjoy the opportunity we have to compete, knowing that [Bayern] are the favorites and that they are a great team."
