Liverpool, led by seven-goal Mohamed Salah, were imperious in the group stage, with Inter's city rivals AC Milan among those who could not stop them winning all six games for the first time in their history. The Nerazzurri hit their stride too, however, posting three straight wins between matchdays three and five to seal their place in the knockout stage after a ten-year absence.

Expert predictions

Paolo Menicucci, Inter reporter
Having reached the knockout stage for the first time in ten years, hopes are now high – even if the Nerazzurri will certainly miss the suspended Nicolò Barella in midfield. Inter have failed to run away at the top of Serie A after earning only one point in their last two games, against AC Milan and Napoli, but Simone Inzaghi's men remain in good form and can be expected to face the Reds with courage and determination. Should Lautaro Martínez regain his scoring touch when it counts, who knows?

Matthew Howarth, Liverpool reporter
Having become the first English side ever to win all six group games, big things are expected of Jürgen Klopp's charges in the knockout stage. The Reds have recovered from a sticky spell over Christmas to win their last six games in all competitions and have momentum on their side as they prepare to face Inter, who will need to put up a stronger fight than their city rivals in December to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

What the coaches say

Simone Inzaghi, Inter coach: "I think Liverpool are the favourites, but matches have to be played. We need to impose our style. I want my players to play with a free mind; it could make a difference in this match. The lads are determined to win."

Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool manager: "[Inter are] a top-class team with a top-class manager. Probably the best team again in Italy this season. Very good organisation, very well drilled, creativity on the pitch and good individuals. We need to give a top-class performance to even have a chance."
