Speed and Shearer save Newcastle

Newcastle United FC 2-1 FC Dynamo Kyiv Alan Shearer's penalty completes a fine Newcastle comeback.

Newcastle United FC saved their UEFA Champions League skins for a second week running as they came from behind to beat FC Dynamo Kyiv.

Shearer winner
Maksim Shatskikh had put Dynamo ahead just two minutes into the second half, but a Gary Speed header and Alan Shearer penalty ensured Sir Bobby Robson's team can go to Feyenoord on Matchday Six still able to make the second group stage.

Ameobi strength
Robson made just one change from the Newcastle team that beat Juventus FC last week, drafting in Shola Ameobi for Lomana LuaLua, and the English Under-21 international striker worried Dynamo early on with his physical presence.

Early boost
Dynamo coach Olexiy Mykhaylychenko deployed Andriy Nesmachniy for Diogo Rincón behind lone striker Shatskikh, with Jerko Leko replacing the injured Aleksandr Khatskevich in midfield, and they received an early boost with Juventus's fourth-minute goal against Feyenoord leaving the Ukrainians only needing a draw to go through.

Robert danger
The first half soon fell into a recognisable pattern, with Newcastle having more of the possession and creating the lion's share of the chances, Laurent Robert looking especially dangerous, but Dynamo moving forward quickly on the break.

Speed chance
Early chances for Newcastle came mainly from their frequent attacking free-kicks, Speed diverting the best of them wide on 14 minutes. Ameobi then went close twice, the first a header blocked by Goran Gavrancic after a superb jinking run and cross on the left by Robert, and the second a shot only just missing the target with Dynamo goalkeeper Vitaliy Reva beaten.

Effort on target
Nikolaos Dabizas, back from suspension, replaced Titus Bramble just before the half-hour, and he had the only effort on target of the first period in the 33rd minute, but his header from Robert's free-kick was straight at Reva.

Dynamo ahead
That opportunity ended a good Newcastle spell, Dynamo looking secure for the rest of the half. And just two minutes after the break, Dynamo were ahead, Gueorgui Peev making the goal with a good run and through-ball, which Shatskikh then slotted past Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal.

Corner converted
It seemed the home side had a mountain to climb. But after an Ameobi back-heel won Newcastle's ninth corner on 58 minutes, they finally made one count, Speed diving to head in.

Penalty turns game
And eleven minutes later the game was turned on its head as Shearer was fouled in the box by Andriy Husin - and the Newcastle captain picked himself up to convert the penalty.

Visitors attack
It was Dynamo's turn to go for goals, and they nearly got one after a 75th-minute corner, Husin having a header cleared off the line and then substitute Rincón shooting wide from close range.

Home side hold on
However, there was no way through a determined Newcastle rearguard, leaving both teams able to enter the final matches with a chance of progressing.
